I saw a lovely (done up) Dawes last week at a local train st, nice leather Brooks and matching bartape, neat saddle bag and the shiniest mudguards I have seen in a long while. I chatted to him about his bike and he said he had these on:

http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/FSGBSLFS/gilles-berthoud-stainless-fender-set

which seemed cheap enough, considering the many SKS Chromoplastic guards I've had break over the years.

So a pair arrived last week and I finally got round to fitting them to my Dawes Galaxy. Oh what a beauty!! They look fab, and though a faff to fit, tailoring them to my bike what with rusted old bolts etc.. (off my older SKS) they do look smart! Now I just need to clean up the bike and pop the new M+ tyres I have for winter!

Its amazing what a new set of guards for the bike can do for your riding.

Last year I bought a 'weekend' bike, a Dolan Dual. At the time it only came with a choice of double or compact in 105 (my budget). Its wrangled with me ever since, struggling on the steepest hills (even with a upgrade from 28 to 32 max on the cassette) and always being in that 'too hard for big front ring and too easy for the smallest front ring'. I periodically look at what wast available and for how much online, to change to 105 triple. Finally in the current sale I found what I need on Chain Reaction Cycles and have got the parts. Hopefully I can get them changed over before the Merse & Moors on the 18th April.

Happy Days!!

I see from EBC's latest email that their Wraith 14 is on sale for £680 (with 54, 56 & 58 in stock). It comes with FSA crank and Shimano Sora 2 x 9 speed groupset but you can currently buy the new 2 x 11 speed Shimano 105 groupset for as little as ~"298.99 (2015) online currently.

That seems like a lot of bike for under a grand.

Came off as I was turning onto Scotstoun Ave in South Queensferry. I went right, front wheel lost grip on the slippery tarmac. Skinned right knee, and scrapped the STIs. Holed my dambed winter leggings! Otherwise I'm fine. Think I'll move to studded tyres now....

Thor Hushovd stars in Norwegian cycle safety clip.

Not everything he does is legal or safe in my own opinion, like cycling down those stairs through someone's garden, but on the whole I think its positive.

Not sure how this would be enforced? unless its a simple measure to get ppl out of cars (It'll never happen here!) Plus lots of people who choose to live so far away from work they couldn't possibly be forced to cycle the ~2 miles !!!

My 2 year old CX bike is being a bit rubbish in the braking dept. I've had it serviced, and new cables put on. The mech says he thinks the discs have become Glazed. Anyone heard this before? I put new pads on, and now new cables. Suppose new disks might help, but was hoping not to have to replace everything!

Ideas?

I've noticed over the past few weeks that 'the council??' have started allowing their employees use the NEPN as a route to their various sites they need to cut the grass on. These things now go wizzing up the NEPN, flashing lights and taking up ~80% of the path width. Now so far they have been driven carefully slowing when around peds and cyclists, and pulling over where possible, but I don't like the precedent it sets. I think in a few years, these paths, once traffic free, could be short cuts for all council employees, wizzing here and there round the city.

What do you think? Am I being too critical?

I ran out of geers chasing Dave up the Lecht on this years Snow Roads. As I have a few more steep hills planned, I thought I'd get an MTB cassette to replace the 108, 11 - 28 I have on at the mo.

Chain Reaction have a good deal on some at the moment. Does anyone know how the HG naming system compares? I see there is a HG50, HG62 HG81, XT M771...

How do these compare against the road range? HG50 = Sora therefore HG81 = 105 and XT M771 = Ultegra?? for instance?

I have new carbon forks for my CX bike but they have no mudguard mounts, but they do have canti brake mounts so I was thinking of cutting a wishbone shape out to mount the crown nudguard stay to and also the dynamo light.
