I see the council has a map and searchable list of its priority gritting routes.

I've successfully used it to find a safer alternative to my normal route to work, where I came a cropper a year or two back on sheet ice one morning.

Whether the priority gritting routes do all get gritted in time is another matter but I'll give our lovely council the benefit of the doubt on that one.

I decided to cut between Gilmore Place and Fountainbridge via. the signed cycle route across the Leamington Lift Bridge and down Gilmore Park this afternoon. On the 700x25 slicks - big mistake! (or should that be, mis-skate?) Once over the bridge I was confronted with frozen slush / snow / tyre tracks. I managed to negotiate that by steering down the snowy bits to avoid sliding. Half-way down I thought the ordeal was over as the ground looked pretty firm. Firm it was, unfortunately it was a solid layer of c.2 inches of ice which I think has formed from run-off of the brewery site. I would heartily recommend you avoid this route unless you have crampons and snow chains on - it was quite terrifying and could easily have slid straight out onto the busy maid road at the bottom.
