Hi,

This dropped through my door last night:

https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/roseburntounioncanal

I couldn't find an existing thread to add this post to.

Though I haven't yet dug into the detail, personally, I like the use of bridges over potentially unpleasant roads. There is however a toucan crossing on the WAR which even so is probably better than the alternative (Telfer subway).

I had cause to drive along here yesterday. Both me and another cycling colleague couldn't work out why it is not open to cyclists. Notwithstanding the fact that there are large signs telling you that cyclist are not allowed on this stretch of road - are there any logical/practical road safety reasons why cyclists can't use this otherwise excellent direct road into and out of town?

These are the new bike racks just fitted for the reopening of the RCP in March. 20 racks in all, a lot more than used to be there. I am still to find out if the bike racks are covered by the pool security system.

Hi all,

Attached is my dissertation questionnaire for commuters by bicycle in the City of Edinburgh. I am an undergraduate at the University of Aberdeen and I would be very grateful if you could spare 2 minutes to complete my short survey. It is completely anonymous and therefore no personal details required.

A great documentary about Greater London Councils cycling infrastructure improvements in the early 1980s.

Covers policy, implementation and vision. Whatever someone’s politics it is interesting to imagine where UK cycling policy may have been today if the cycling unit and "Livingston's" GLC had not been abolished in 1986.

Although Boris Johnston and the GLA is doing good work from the Superhighways to "Boris bikes" what happened in the early 1980s must have been quite ground breaking at the time if the momentum had been maintained cycling infrastructure may have been much enhanced today.

A report that highlights some of the trends in both cycling and policy.

I've recently started using this road a lot - taking my little one from home in Davidson's Mains to our childminder in Cramond, then reversing course to cycle in to work (and then the reverse process in the evening). Cramond Road North is the direct connection between the 2 areas, but is not a pleasant road to cycle on - down or uphill, essentially a "country" road, cars usually too fast and too close. I don't think I have had a single journey on it over the last fortnight that hasn't had at least one close pass or badly-timed overtake. There are alternative routes, but they almost double the distance I would have to cover in each direction (which comes with a time penalty on a regular commute, so...)

I felt motivated to write to my 3 local councillors at the beginning of the week: no response as yet, but I have realised that I am not sure what could/ should be done to that road to make it safer. I wondered if anyone else knows the road and might have ideas about how it could be made more cycle-friendly? If I do have some conversations with LCs, it would be good to have some ideas to suggest.

So far, I've thought about a Gogar Station Road-style makeover, turning it into a one-way route for cars (and making the other direction go via Barnton), building a two-way path down the edge of the golf course to the immediate west of the road behind the existing stone wall - all options with substantial downsides. There's an existing pavement on one side that perhaps could be broadened and made shared use, but that creates pedestrian conflict (although it's not heavily used). Perhaps speed cameras and/ or conventional traffic calming measures could be the way forward (although that's not always that well regarded by the cycle planning experts, is it?). Anyway, if anyone has ideas or comments, that would be much appreciated.

Basically, all that is really needed is a magic "make drivers drive more sensibly" ray at either end, but in lieu of that...

I often use the towpath and sometimes I want to get to Charlotte Square.

I know about the Loudons/Widows/EICC path, but once you are over the WAR bridge and into Rutland Sq, where does one go next? Rutland St is one way (southbound only) and if you go via Canning Street through to Shandwick place, you are faced with a "No Right Turn" (which is ignored by most taxis and delivery drivers). I have been walking across the crossing to get to Stafford Street legally, then remounting and continuing.

Am I missing something? Is there a way of getting from NCN 75 to NCN 1 without dismounting that I don't know about?

Any help gratefully received. Thank you

Feeling like a bit of exploring, I did this route yesterday: http://www.strava.com/routes/976241
The first half was pretty good. Trying to get onto the path by the Esk at Musselburgh was stupidly complicated. There's an almost-path going from the far north foot bridge to the start of the path, but it doesn't go all the way. Had to double back a few times.
The section from Whitecraig to Dalkeith was fantastic - wide, smooth tarmac. It was empty, so while being a great bit of path, it doesn't seem to serve much purpose. Maybe people use it to commute?
Then the nasty bit - coming out of Dalkeith the bike infrastructure just stops. The shared use path becomes vague. I found it on the opposite side of the road, then sailed down to the Sheriffhall roundabout, and a "Cyclists Dismount" sign. Just where the road needs cycle infrastructure most, it has none. I did a bit of vehicular cycling and got round it fine.
The stretch into town was very mixed. Some half decent painted lines, but they also seem to end at junctions, where they are needed most. A few lanes than thin out to about 1ft in parts - just lethal. The Cameron Toll roundabout is the same - bikes are directed onto the pavement, then, nothing. No indication of where we are meant to go. I had to get back onto the roundabout to get around. The last leg into town was fine, apart from car parking in the bike lane, and drivers stopping in ASLs.
Altogether a decent sample of Edinburgh's cycling infrastructure. Half exciting, half frustrating.

A newspaper set up a map for the Munich area where people can add places that are dangerous or awkward for cyclists (or pedestrians). Lots of people added the difficult spots in their area, making politicians, especially the Munich mayor, very aware of the problems. The mayor promised to tackle the big problems this year. (In what way the things will be changed is a different story)

Does anyone know if a similar map has been done for the Edinburgh area?
I think it would be a good way of giving everyone an easy way to put in conflict places, and hopefully make politicians more aware of them.

This is the one for Munich:

Upsala Nya Tidning - Sweden. The city council of Uppsala approved a new bicycle policy on Monday aimed above all at improving the infrastructure for cyclists. The city is on the right path, the independent daily Upsala Nya Tidning writes:
"How do you get more people to use bikes? A car-free city centre is a fine goal, but the bicycle can't always replace the car. The public transport system has to be improved as well. ... The car is important for most people, but car-based mobility is reaching its limits. In big cities many people are deciding not to buy a car. ... The trend toward overcrowding and more urbanity - even outside the city centres - is also making itself felt in Uppsala. The old through-streets are being turned into pedestrian shopping streets. ... This is an important change that makes the city a more exciting place to live. And in this new city the bike is becoming an ever more important means of transport." (31/10/2013) +++

Hello everyone,

I am a keen biker, but I am experiencing some issues with parking my bike.
I recently moved to Lauriston Gardens, where there are no facilities for parking the bike.
In the internal space towards my flat there are several parking slots for cars, but nothing for bicycles, apart from a small bike rack that is not attached to anything and is abandoned in a corner, unusable.

This means, the only secure storage space I have for my bike is to leave it at work in the bike shed, but that way I can't ride it to work.

Last night I left it, for the first time, locked to a house fence on my street, as that was the only thing I could lock my bike to. The bike was attached to the side, completely out of the way, both for people accessing the flat and for pedestrians. While picking it up this morning I have been verbally abused by the flat occupier, who shouted at me from behind the curtains of their open window "she's finally f***ing taking the stupid bike!" and more along the lines, with so much hathred and anger in their voice, that I left literally shocked and scared about someone like that damaging my bike or becoming aggressive.

Why does it need to be so difficult? Why can't I just lock my bike to a secured bike rack where it shouldn't bother anyone? What can I do if I want to continue riding and stay safe?

Thanks,
Silvia

This has annoyed me for a while, and is just another little thing that makes a mockery of the council claim to make Edinburgh a 'Model Cycling City'.

The cut through past Old Registers House from Randolph Place to Charlotte Square is useful. So useful in fact that it's part of Sustrans NCN1.

Now let's just forget for a moment that on the Charlotte Square side there's no dropped kerb, and on the Randolph Place side there's a dropped kerb onto a manhole cover and the most uneven and gappy cobbles in the city. Forget that poor aspect of the cycling infrastructure.

When the tram works began and buses were divered onto Charlotte Square (the surface of which was never obviously intended for that heavy traffic, it's shifted so much in the last couple of years) a temporary bus stop was put in. So temporary it's still there, and marked on GoogleMaps. And where do they put it? Right in the way of the entrance and exit to this lane.

Heading west to east it's not tooooo bad because the stop ends just to the left of the exit, although it completely obscures traffic travelling around the square when a bus is stopped. But going east to west, as I did this morning, if you have two buses there it's a right royal pain in the proverbial. The buses completely block off access and you're left with a choice between the typical 'cyclists dismount' scenario, or riding along the pavement for 10 yards suffering the glowers of those walking along the pavement (or disgorging from the bus).

Just a legal technical point, to gain access to a route on which you are legally allowed to cycle you are allowed to cycle on the pavement where normally you wouldn't - I've stretched this rule so that if a bus is (as is the norm) blocking the normal access, I can adopt an alternative access.

So just what could the council have done to maintain the aura of this grand move towards a cycling culture to rival Copenhagen and Amsterdam? Well on the south side of Old Registers House there is an identical alleyway, on which cycles are not allowed, which offers two solutions.

1. Change the cycle route to the other side, one benefit being that those travelling west to east do not have the view of the road obscured on coming out; or

2. Have the bus stop blocking access to THAT alleyway instead.

The current situation doesn't show malice towards cyclists, but just shows that any time ANY councillor says that they want the city to be a 'Model Cycling City' they are, and I'm afraid this is true, lying. If they were telling the truth the council would have a dedicated team of more than one chap fielding enquiries and coming up with ideas, and utterly idiotic things like this simply would NOT be put in place.

The Danes and the Dutch would be laughing their socks off.
