"Bowling to helensburgh is a more interesting route but more dangerous- the A82 or A814 Cardross"

If you take the cycle path to Balloch/Lomond from Dumbarton, the A818 to Helensburgh has a cycle path.

Ha ha -left at 430am and the union canal was all OK-the falkirk tunnel was still scary, Burke and hare worked on it and dumped the clothing from the bodies into the canal.the union meets the forth and Clyde canal and from there the route is sightly more interesting and also busier with walkers. i got to bowling where the canal route meets the Clyde and i had to phone for back up. i cycled to dumbarton and met family. Bowling to helensburgh is a more interesting route but more dangerous- the A82 or A814 Cardross. it took me 7 hours for 111 km total cycling time.

A straight west wind thru helensburgh, late evening overnight would be best as dropping then to single digit. Tho I never think the BBC gets the wind right. Lang Whang for instance never single digit.

Route NCN75 is very circuitous

The canals towpaths route is no less circuitous

Beyond the wheel on the Forth and Clyde Canal has been much improved of late. Can be one long thin puddle

Pick a day like today when blowing from East? Tho getting back in the same day would make it 100 or so miles?? And quite a slog

Even going to wheel and back was too boring for @WIngpig, @ Uber ice who bailed From towpath on return at Linlithgow to go back to Edinburgh on roads and then I did too a bit further on and nearly gate crashed a toffs party in private mansion looking for cup of tea

@Greenroofer posted here about cycling it from Helensburgh to Edinburgh.

I've cycled to Glasgow a couple of times on NCN 754. If I remember right, the stretch from Falkirk to where the JMW splits off at Kirkintilloch is probably the nicest bit. The path is wider there and there aren't any narrow bridge underpasses. There are a couple of annoying chicanes, though.
