I was delighted to see that a cyclehoop had appeared outside ChopChop, especially when I recollected that it was on a list somewhere of places we wanted them -- although taken aback to see that it was 2 years ago!

Woo, result (maybe). Initial response was "it's fine, we're not going to do anything except cut the grass back and by the way cyclist should dismount to get past the obstruction" (which they have done, and it does make it better, thank you council), so I wrote back saying "that's not good enough for a council that's trying to encourage sustainable travel" (or something along those lines) and also contacted Maggie Chapman Green councillor, and today I've had a response via her that the Council are going to do something to improve the access early in the new financial year.
Watch this space... http://g.co/maps/7kbku

Greener Leith blog - Cut through from The Quilts

I wrote an email to the local management team last night, re: the fiddly barrier over the road between the Quilts and West Bowling Green Street in Leith (it's on my route to work). Because I'd seen a post on Greener Leith recently about how the local management team had got the section of path nearby Tarmaced recently, I mentioned that in my email.

I then forwarded the email to Greener Leith out of courtesy, as I'd mentioned them. They have (with my permission) posted the email on their blog, but misinterpreting my flattery to the LMT ("worked your magic to get it fixed") as flattery of Greener Leith [facepalm]

I've asked Greener Leith to reword their post...

Anyway, the upshot is, that access is rubbish on a bike, clatter of pedals or a ride through dogshit. I hope they can improve it with a dollop of Tarmac to make the ride nicer.

@Wingpig

Not actually been to that ASDA. Presumably racks are planned?? I presume this is ASDA's land/responsibility?

Meanwhile CEC is working on this year's 'set' of racks.

Most will be Sheffield/Edinburgh type but some wil be CycleHoops (Pear Tree pic above). Official line is - "They don't necessarily increase the amount of parking available but they do formalise it, make it more secure and practical
and improve its image".

In addition, "we have plans for large increases in on-street parking in the city centre, and then in smaller 'town centres' (i.e. Morningside, etc)".

This is clearly good news, though I don't suppose Princes Street is included...

CycleHoops would be ideal in Raeburn Place.

Here's a quick feedback report. Thanks to all who came. We'll probably try and do a couple more of these events later in the year.

There was also a lot of demand for Security marking so we'll do our best to make sure we get the police along.

We'll also try to give everyone a bit more notice :)

Don't get me wrong chdot, I am not against the CycleHoops, sure they make a statement and help stop bikes falling over. But there is a need for a lot more capacity than can be afforded by the current street furniture. In popular areas it is already difficult to find somewhere to secure your bike as all the street furniture is already in use, the CycleHoops aren't going to be able to change this situation.

A few CycleHoops might not go amiss along Bruntsfield Place. From memory the nearest Sheffield stands are beside the supermarkets at Leven St and Holy Corner, and most of the furniture is low height and low security street sign poles. I suppose one could use the racks at Edinburgh Bicycle, but that's a bit unfair on patrons if it's busy.

True, but it's not 'either or'. CycleHoops can be fixed to existing posts. They make a 'statement' - and, importantly, greatly reduce the chance of bikes falling over.

"How do we get this for the rest of the city?l"

The Council has 'trialled' the CycleHoop in West Nicholson Street so it's good that there will be more in Leith.

They are quite neat and can be fixed more quickly/easily than standard 'Edinburgh Racks'. The city centre could do with some more - e.g. Princes Street - but CycleHoops aren't approved for the "World Heritage Site" (yet?).

The cycle team at the Council is happy to get suggested sites - send to cycling@edinburgh.gov.uk. (Photos of exact poles/locations help - so get your camera phones out!)

We're pleased to announce we've managed to get some extra funding to expand cycling parking facilities in Leith - should be installed by the end of the financial year.
