Ooeerr. Hi there rozzawozza. There is no specific spot mentioned to meet but I am sure that we will find each other as I think we should be pretty obvious as a group of cyclists hanging about!! See you there. Perhaps I should mention that I will be wearing a red waterproof and black cycling trousers. Also notable, so I am told, is that I am a six foot woman.

@Sally, people could, should they wish join the group anywhere along the above route I would have said.

Below is a link to the route on Google maps.

http://g.co/maps/fbjz2

Thinking about it, even if there were children to consider this is probably the most straightforward route and the roads are nice and wide.

As it appears there will be no small children to consider, and that part of Mayfield road is still dug up (gas works), the intended route was down the Gilmerton Rd, right into Liberton Rd, across lights at Lady Rd, up Craigmillar Pk, turn left into Mentone Gdns, Mentone Tce, cross Mayfield Rd, left onto Relugas Rd, and right into S Lauder Rd, straight on up Lauder Rd, across Dick Pl and Grange Rd, left into Hatton Pl, right into Chalmers Cres and down Argyle Pl. The reason for using Lauder Rd is that there is no access currently at Findhorn Pl/Seton Pl.

Here is the route http://g.co/maps/fbjz2

hi guys, got at least one person coming by car from Dumfries who was interested in joining a ride in. He doesn't know Edinburgh that well - he's not a novice cyclist, just thought it would be easier for navigation purposes.

If someone would be willing to pm me an email address can I put him in touch with them so he can arrange a rendezvous. I'm going to be coming up by train with my Brompton the day before so can't help. It may just be him or a few more, he's the CTC secretary down here

@Roibeard - I did recce the envisaged route yesterday and as per another post a very large section of the Mayfield road is due to be dug up for gasworks, Findhorn Pl is shut, also due to roadworks with no access to or beyond Seton Place. I think therefore we will turn into Relugas road and proceed up S Lauder and the Lauder Rds to get to the POP. Not that this will affect you if you are coming from town.

I did the full Lover's Loan route once, and it was too much hassle with the kids - the railings restricted movement too much, and the children would bunch up, so the "responsible" adults couldn't see to advise them to cross the road, etc.

It was also a bit narrow if meeting pedestrians, and the walls on either side mean no wiggle room!

So, we stick to the roads, just different ones than suggested...

I digress, I think overall that the Cyclestreets route is probably better as there are probably traffic lights at most of the junctions that we do encounter, although the route above is traffic free mostly.

The route that I normally take is go up Craigmillar Park, turn left into Mentone St, cross Mayfield road, turn into Relugas Rd, then into St Thomas' Road at the end of this we would have to dismount to go up the path that runs beside the cricket club, this is because there is no dropped pavement and there are bike bars, cross Dick Pl, another dismount I am afraid, up Lover's Loan, which brings you out at Beaufort Rd (now according to this map, Lover's Loan continues on the other side - I am off to check this out because I have never noticed it - well lookey here http://g.co/maps/pau8y) but do a left and a right into Chalmers Crescent which leads you into Argyle Place and into MMW. This route is not that hilly although the Lover's Loan is quite an uphill at the start.

As a general rule if there are railings like these that seem to be a bit random, it usually means that there is a path of some sort, just thought I would say.

@Claggy Cog (urrggg - your maintenance is surely better than that!)

I'd second the Esslemont avoidance, particularly as Craigmillar Park has bus lanes. Although I've taken to going all the way along West Mayfield, into Fountainhall Road, then up South Lauder/Lauder Road, hence to Argyle Place and MMW.

Arguably a bigger hill up Lauder Road compared to South/Upper Gray Street, but I've found that these are quite narrow for taking a slow party (as is Causewayside). Lauder Road is much wider allowing for a slow climb or stragglers without aggravating motorists (although the Fountainhall Road section is essentially single track).

The alternative Innocent Railway route leads back to Laidback's question of how to get from Holyrood Park to the Meadows...

As there may be young children this is the route I would suggest although I might suggest that we miss out Esslemont as it is rather a big hill but go straight on through the lights at the Lady Rd junction and take a left into Lygon Road.

http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/1933942/

There is an alternative which means we would join up with the Innocent at the end of the new Peffermill path heading west slightly to come back into town, no big ask for adults and much safer for children. This is that section of the route. I know my way through the Inch and am happy to lead.

There is no parking on Gilmerton Road per se itself but the Inch is a sprawling housing scheme extending on the left and right sides of the Gilmerton Road with lots of small roads to park in the vicinity. I would not park on the Mount Vernon Road and there is definitely no parking on Kingston Avenue, it does not even have a pavement down one side of it! Claverhouse Drive being the nearest, it looks like Craigend is double yellow for much of it, this will be due to the proximity of the NRIE down the road, and employees beating the parking fees by parking on road in the scheme. Funny, I never think car or about parking facilities for said!!

@sally, is everyone to meet around Middle Meadow Walk. If the meeting is to be advertised and a number turn up perhaps for safety reasons I suggest we meet at the entrance to Liberton Golf Club as there is a lay-by/entrance where people are off the road at least.

@rogan - I was thinking....would 1.00 o'clock be convenient still, as there will be a fair amount going on and getting there a bit earlier would probably be wise. As to whether or not there is a contingent of people from the Gilmerton/Liberton area remains to be seen. Since you appear to be in the vicinity of Liberton Hospital I think if we meet at the Kingston Crossroads would be easiest. It is the bottom of Mt Vernon Rd, where the Gilmerton Rd crosses it. Perhaps others from the forum may join us or express an interest in doing so.
