Far better design would require the key to lock it, then if you lose you key that is on you. This whole threads is caused by bad design of the lock. See also the benefit of Mortice over Yale

All’s well that ends well, as they say! I hate the ‘disappeared key’ feeling with a vengeance. I once locked up the bakkyfiets with an alarmed motorcycle disc lock at St James Quarter which similarly allows fitting without the key, and then we had a taxi round-trip to retrieve the key from home as we were too short on our deadline to bus it.

Today it was my turn to be rubbish, because I failed to notice that I left the house this morning without the means to open my bicycle lock. Lest malicious readers think I own only one lock, heh, I have several, but the lock I brought with me today can be closed without a key. For convenience I suppose.

Luckily* this discovery happened in the company of several CCEers. @bakky lent me a spare U-lock as extra security while @LaidBack and I went off to consider padlock destruction techniques and in search of another cafe so that I could wait for a lift home to look for the missing key. I found it, fortunately, and made sure it will Never Happen Again. Ever. Probably.

I eventually made it back into town and rescued my bike, failed to transact any business at three shops I visited during the afternoon, so rode home into the teeth of whatever the latest storm is and later delivered Big Lock to @bakky with the help of the huge enduro motorbike because I'd had enough of cycling for today.

* and in equal measure, embarassingly

FYI, if you miss out on the Uni deal you can attend St Leonards Police Station and buy the same lock there for £10. I presume other stations may do the same? (At least Sprog MKI was e-mailed by community constable via tenants association to that effect about 6 months ago.)

A pretty decent deal there from the UNI,
particularly as nowadays just having a cable only secured bike seems to scream the advert as follows:

"Simply try and slice through the cable provided with your trusty handheld boltcutters and you will very very likely succeed in stealing me"

Prevention is sometimes better than curing of course.

Edinburgh is doing better of late with more bike racks etc. Seems to be pushed by the 'sustainability' folks. I've been asked to put myself forward as a sustainable travel 'ambassador' for my work place.

But I will take it seriously when the post which is responsible for bikes is not also all the post responsible for parking.

I would also like t see the Uni being more progressive/proactive with the city about various things. Eg making sure access to the university buildings is not cut off by roadworks. And that the 'quality' bike route is actually that. Etc.

As I said elsewhere recently, they have the knowledge and/or the people who know how to research stuff, but need to take advantage of that.

Edinburgh Uni has always impressed me with its active cycling community.

My alma mater took no interest at all in people commuting by bike, even going so far as to build an overflow car park, while leaving the bikeists to make do with handrails that were better than the 'official' solution which was a couple of rusty steel poles bolted to the wall near the main entrance, positioned just high enough to be of no use without a long cable.

On 14/03/13 there will be big discounts available on high quality locks, says an email that's been sent round the Edinburgh University BUG lists:

Hi All

Tomorrow we have an extra Dr Bike happening outside the University Visitor Centre at Potterrow. This will be from 12 noon until 2pm.

Lothian and Borders Police, University Security and the Transport and Parking Office will also be on hand to offer advice on keeping bikes secure. The key message we want to get across is the importance of using a good quality bike lock to minimise the chance of theft. We will be selling high quality Sold Secure Gold Level bicycle locks for £10, instead of usual retail price of about £45. The sale of bicycle locks will be strictly limited to 1 per member of University staff or student. Your matriculation or staff card must be shown in order to make the purchase. There is a limited supply of locks.

Please take a look at this short news article and video we have prepared in conjunction with the Crime Prevention Officers at Lothian and Borders Police:

http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/transport/news/better-lock-bike

If you cannot attend tomorrow there will be another opportunity to come along to the Bike Security Roadshow on Tuesday 26th March at Edinburgh College of Art (details on the link provided above).

Does the lock have a "Sold Secure" rating of Silver or above? You'll need an angle grinder. If it has a lower rating, or is unrated, then simply use a heavy-ish hammer (2lb hammer should do). Hit the protruding barrel of the lock cylinder where you insert the key, away from the loop of the D.

I lost the keys for an old style/cheap D-lock and it took just four well aimed blows from a 2lb hammer, or about 30 seconds, to spring the lock open. Lock itself was undamaged: if I'd found the key I could have relocked it!

In my line of work, there's a rather large problem with plant machinery (JCBs, telehandlers, forklifts etc.) being sold with interchangable "site keys". Great if you want to save time around the construction site so that workmen don't have to hunt around for the right key, pain in the unmentionables if you've got an interest in plant machinery not being stolen.

"30 years ago there was a 'scandal' involving Citadel where a batch of locks were manufactured and sold with interchangeable keys. "

30 years ago, if you locked yourself out of your car the usual technique to get back in (if you didn't have a coat hanger handy) was to find someone else with the same type of car to see if their key would work. Quite often it did.

The first bike lock I bought was a traditional padlock plus chain affair. £3.99 from Quality Cycles in D'Mains I seem to recall. I returned it when I discovered that it could be opened with a flat bladed screwdriver.

The woman in the shop tried to argue along the lines that "no wonder it's broken if you go poking a screwdriver into it".

Since then/currently have a barrel-keyed Kryptonite. Off to the EBC sale at lunchtime, then.

Nopes, my ex had a miraculous escape from losing her key after the fixing snapped like that. Her bike was locked up outside the Cameo on a Friday, so we reeeeally weren't keen on leaving it there, nor keen on having to organise and pay for cutting tool use.

About four hours later, she discovered the key had been nestling in the elastic bandy bit at the bottom of her sweater, which had rolled up on itself.

PM me if you don't have access to a grinder.

"Does anyone know if I can buy spares or will I need to get an angle grinder to chomp it off "

Depends on make BUT you need to know number!

Angle grinders take a couple of minutes.

You can use battery powered ones in public without the police being called...
