@iwrats go and get them to blow air in your eye etc. Then if it is just plus one try national gallery shop. About £12 for their specs but nice frames. This is what happened to me at around same time my dad started wearing reading specs. Starts with writing getting smaller on packets then it is the slippery slope - holding your phone at armslength etc.

"I bought a pair of reading glasses from the supermarket" - unusual title choice but I think it might sell.

@Blueth

Perfectly possible. Looking at the front (which is a disc brake...don't ask) I think I have a sticky piston there too. Same age as the rear brake, so no surprise. Silicone spray's a good idea. I do have silicone grease somewhere but it's hard to use outwith a full caliper overhaul.

@arrelcat

Ooooh, first generation VFRs are lovely. Always found braided hoses a bit sharp for my liking though.

My first-gen VFR750 only had anti-dive on the fork, and it didn't really work. Braided lines helped somewhat though.

I find, with any hydraulic brake, that it pays to remove the caliper then the pads, occasionally and carefully use silicon spray on the pistons after pushing them out a bit and cleaning them up.

This not only lubricates the pistons and seals but also reduces the ability of dirt to stick.

It should be possible to do this with rim brakes, given care.

Ain't many Magura rim brake users around Edinburgh which is a pity because they are rather good. Thing is though, like all hydraulic kit they frighten people. Pity, because they're actually really easy to work on.

After three winters I finally had a piston seize solid.

All it needed was the other piston clamped in place and a wee squeeze on the lever to break it loose from whatever cack was jamming it. But it wouldn't retract. Caked-on cack.

So I pumped it out as far as it would go and polished the piston surface with Autosol on a Q-tip. Job done. (That's Autosol without an 'n'.)

I'm lucky in that I taught myself to do a caliper service on a Honda VFR800 which has a brake system based on cabalistic rather than hydraulic principals, so nothing on a bicycle is too daunting.
