"Three landed in fields and one crashed through the roof of a cottage"

The picture of the cottage that appeared in the papers was doctored to show the hole because by the time the journalist turned up it had already been fixed.

EDIT: Actually, looks like it was Henry Coates, curator of the Perthshire Museum of Natural History who did the doctoring.

About five or six years ago, at 3-4am, I saw a similar green fireball fall from the sky over the A1 near Torness. For a couple of seconds it lit the landscape as daylight would.

I can only assume the fragments of this one were lost at sea and being the time of day it was I found no reference at all to it online. Absolutely stunning moment.

"Around 13:15 on 3 December 1917 scores of people, from Northumberland to Aberdeenshire, saw an unusually bright, fiery mass streaking through the sky. A loud explosion was heard and four fragments fell to earth between Coupar Angus and Blairgowrie in Strathmore. Three landed in fields and one crashed through the roof of a cottage. These four pieces were all recovered and collectively became known as the Strathmore Meteorite."

Opening on Friday 10 November at the National Museum of Scotland, this small display will reunite the four fragments of the Strathmore Meteorite for the first time since it fell to earth 100 years ago. Down to Earth will bring together eyewitness accounts, documents and newspaper articles telling the human story of this out-of-this-world occurrence.
