My other and clearly much better half pointed out that we have accidental damage cover on our contents insurance and bikes are included. A long and dreary phone call confirms that they will, indeed, cover the cost of a new frame and transferring all the components across. Just need a bike shop to provide an assessment of the damage and a quote. Result.

Indeed. <strike>Now that supply and demand have been so neatly put together, I hope the other 'suitors' will do the decent thing and withdraw from the contest.</strike> Strike that, not really any of my business! Below still applies, though...

@wingpig
Did indeed but I didn't think of that as a touring replacement. Besides if I can slip a new frame under the domestic radar then I'm still one bike up.

The ebay bikes all look a bit wee for me.

It could be the cold has made it worse, or it has just come to the end of its life. Shame. I presume it's aluminium, thus basically unfixable.

Why not pick up a nice second hand frame from Eastside Bikes/MacDonald Cycles or even the Bike Station? If anyone has one that's the right size. I've seen 531, 753, etc. in various places. If it's a tourer replacement though, an old, good quality Chromoly MTB frame might fit the bill (though wheel set/tyres may need to be swapped for 26"). Steel less likely to crack...

So now I know the cause of the clicking / creaking sound that has provided rhythmic accompaniment to my ride into work and home the past couple of days.

Took tourer (Cannondale T800) into Alpine Bikes for a bit of a service and as I describe all the things that could be improved about its performance (braking / gear indexing / new cables etc) I mention the creak, look down and see that where there has been a small ding in the frame for a few years, there is now also a ragged line running from each side, halfway round the frame.

"That'll be the cause of the creaking then" says the man. "Oh, that's a crack says his pal". No point servicing that. "And I'd strongly advise walking it back" man adds.

I haven't noticed any signs of cracking and check periodically, knowing that this dent is a weak spot. Haven't bashed it recently. Maybe a coincidence but might the recent cold snap have made the frame more brittle? Does that make sense?

Still, every tragedy is an opportunity thinks I. But what to do?

Buy a new frame? Planet X Kaffenback looks good at £250 for the frame and forks and then transfer as much componentry as possible across.

Buy a bike just for commuting - Revolution Cross or similar

Change my plan for the Cycle2Work bike from a roadie and splash it all on a new tourer / commuter?
