rtc to Rosyth to Zeebrugge? boo! thats the route i was going to take, you mean i have to go all the way to pompy or somewhere?

Well (Danish owned) DFDS bought the (Dutch owned) Norfolk Line. One reason was to consolidate the Rosyth-Zeebrugge traffic on the Newcastle - Amsterdam route (maybe using the extra larger ferries freed up by other routes being canceled.)

Norfolk Line was smaller and won awards for its services. Despite its high fare structure there was enough business. Many of these buses, cars and trucks will now come up the A1. Plans are afoot to re-instate the route as freight only with government support (again).

DFDS always objected to the original proposal of a direct link from Scotland to the continent. Not surprisingly it preferred to have a monopoly. With this takeover they have fulfilled their wish.

Smyril Line doesn't call in at Scotland (Shetland) or Norway now.

They still do run from Iceland to Denmark.

Smyril Line - North Atlantic Ferry

So now gone for time being - as are the ferries from Newcastle to Norway/Sweden and the ferry from Rosyth to Zeebrugge.

So contrary to what people may have expected flying is continuing to grow. Then again ferries are dependent on cheap fuel for the cars that fill their decks and the ships engines.

Make sure I have brake blocks in stock to replace when I want them. My Surly melts through them like a hot knife through butter but needs thinner ones than are normally in the bike shop. Perhaps I can place a regular order, like with weekly veg box deliveries?

Apologies for the painful pun. I should get a job on the EEN with skills like that.

Anyway, back OT, anyone making any cycling-based new years resolutions? Any where in particular you're going to cycle, any specific bike you've set your heart on obtaining, any new sort of cycling you're going to try? Or maybe just a general more / further / faster / fitter one?

One of mine will be more along the lines of attitude. I'm going to try and relax more and get less wound up by the inconsiderate actions of other road users (yes, not just drivers but cyclists too!). It doesn't do anything but raise my blood pressure.

I'm also going to cycle around Iceland (well part of it)
I'm also going to cycle some of the Scottish Islands on what is currently being planned as the "Ten Malts Tour".
I'm also not going to buy any bikes next year!
