The Great North Road was one of the areas where the City Ambition grant was supposed to be improving. The roundabout looks nice enough but 30 yards down the road you're dumped onto a dual carriageway with nothing but a dotted line - and then nothing - for protection. Can't imagine that's done much for 8-80 cycling. From what I saw of it (at the Cycling Embassy AGM infrastructure safari), the plans weren't bad, with some fairly hefty routes planned, including a copenhagen style track along at least one major route. I think they've since got a bit bogged down in the politics of actually doing it, plus trying to make the UK design guidelines actually work with segregated infrastructure.
