Yes, I agree. It is just far too common to really be dealt with any other way. That advert is pretty good!

We need a number of campaigns that make mobile/computer use while driving as socially unacceptable as drink-driving. There's only so much the police can do on this, so it's going to need real social pressure.campaigns

There is talk of increasing the penalty for driving with a mobile phone (I assume it would extend to other devices?). I am not sure it would help since it might then be seen as too harsh which means even fewer drivers convicted.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-28324408

The sheer huge volume of drivers using mobiles/tablets etc is just getting ridiculous.

I refer readers back to my previous thread, with video, of someone reading a Kindle while driving. Tablet PC involves even more interaction/lack of attention!

I pulled up behind the driver of a silver Saab outside Craiglockhart primary school the other day. There were children everywhere. He was stuck in a traffic queue.

Then the rest of the traffic in the queue moved on, but there was a long delay before he started moving. (This is a classic sign of someone texting while driving.)

When I caught up with him and passed him, I was shocked to see he was using a TABLET PC on his lap!

Unfortunately my helmet camera didn't get a good shot of the tablet, otherwise he'd be all over YouTube. Doh!

I doubt the police will ever do anything about this. The best we can hope for is an online wall of shame for drivers (e.g YouTube videos, pictures). Googling a reg plate number should reveal any other misdemeanors that have been recorded in this way...

I have recently shared the ASL red patch with a big BMW 4x4 thingy. He wasn't using a mobile phone though, it was an electric toothbrush.

A few days back I saw a driver holding a phone in one hand when, with the other hand, he waved me across in front of him (I was on foot). That was nice of him so I had to reduce my Paddington Stare to a look of indifference. Had he not been on the phone he would have got a friendly wave. That'll teach him.

The only thing I can think of is to compile a log for a couple of months. Would be a bit of work but if you can present, say 100 motorists worth of dates, places and times they might take a look?

I have no suggestions, but very much share this concern. I see it everyday in busy areas, around schools etc.

We have had a lot of observations on this forum reported of drivers using mobile phones whilst driving. The feeling iam getting, perhaps incorrectly is that unless the police see this breach themselves or there is some form of crash which has witnesses, nothing happens.

My latest was seen from vantage point of a coach, on the A8 near Eurocentral, driver of white range rover G1 TRU texting. Can't even find a suitable email address on Strathclyde Police website.

As cyclists we have a good viewpoint of such behaviour, sadly though each of us is singular, how can we acheive multiple witnesses?

I'd report it, even though they'd almost certainly do nowt, just in case when she's eventually involved in an accident there's a note of her prior form regarding applying all available attention to the road.

After a couple of would-have-reported-if-I'd-had-a-camera-to-record-the-numberplates things yesterday (including one nerk on a phone skipping the lights at Abbeymount) I'm definitely considering considering getting myself one for winter festive period.

Left work yesterday at around 3:40 and was crossing Crewe Toll roundabout, indicated that I was leaving the roundabout and was heading towards the Western when the stationary car on the inside lane driven by a young woman pulled out in front of me and turned left. I hit the brakes as I wasn't sure at first whether she was goung on to the roundabout or turning left. Anyway, I noticed that she was on the phone and that the pedestrian crossing lights had just turned red and she was now stationary, so so cycled up to her car (she was still on the phone) and slapped her window with my gloved hand, well she nearly had a canary by the look on her face and I shouted "Get of the blinking phone you silly lady" or words to that effect. Forget to get her reg number in all my anger. Would you report such behaviour to the police if it happened to you?
