Anyone know what the police presence at the Wellington Statue end of Princes Street was about today?
I was stuck obeying the hand signals of a policeman on a motorbike for quite a while, until 2 black SUVs got waved through, the bikes then followed it. I can't find anything on the interwebs about it...

Anyone else see Motorway Cops on BBC 1 last night?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03c7h9y/Motorway_Cops_Series_5_Out_of_Control/

My favourite story was of the Lorry Driver, caught using his iPhone while driving a 44 ton truck. He'd already had his licence suspended and had managed to accumulate a further nine points since getting it back.

Rather than send him to court to face the judge, they used their 'professional discretion' (aka took pity on him because he'd just got divorced and was looking at pics of his kids on his phone) and let him off with a caution.

Doomed, we are.

Just had a conversation with one of Lothian & Borders' "mounties". Two of them had pulled up at the cycle marking event, so I chatted for a bit.

She had spotted me on the road before - why do folk seem to remember me?

Turns out the hardtail she was riding came from Edinburgh Bike Co-op, and that they had trialed lightbars.

They'd found the bottle mounted battery packs to be too heavy and that shouting was equally effective when clearing the road ahead.

Experience has shown that around town the bikes are quicker than vehicles - often the mounted officers will arrive first on the scene, particularly with our current road works and closures.

I'd have expected the "useful to patrol paths/cycle lanes" rationale, rather than "it's quicker in town", although most of us here would recognise the speed of a cyclist in traffic. Mind you, if on a shout, they do (may?) ride on the pavement, so appear able to take shortcuts that even we wouldn't (shouldn't?).

Previous mention of the mounties

One criticism was that the bikes were heavy, and they looked it!

An expected comment was that she saw fewer RLJs when cycling on patrol...

Good afternoon all,

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Paul and I work within the Road Policing Branch of Lothian & Borders Police. I have been part of the working group looking at improving cycle safety in the city of Edinburgh over the last 18 months or so. I have approached my line managers and asked if I can register on here to offer advice on cyling and other road safety issues that may be current just now.

I cycle in Edinburgh on a daily basis, commuting to my place of work at Fettes. I own 3 bikes, and want another one. I watch cycling on the telly, and I go cycling with my kids. I am married and also own a dog.

Professionally, I have been in the police for 11 years, 7 of which have been with the Road Policing Branch. I am currently attached to the patrol section of the branch and am trained to advanced level in Vehicle Accident Investigation. I am and advanced police driver and also hold a full motorcycle licence.

The purpose of me becoming a member on here is to assist with any queries you may have. I can not take reports of incidents, or give advice on any ongoing enquiry. I can not give my personal opinion, however I will endeavour to be as frank and honest as I can.

If you do wish to report an incident, you can use this link http://lbpcmsstaging/Internet/contact_us.aspx

I am fairly new to forums, this being my first foray so to speak, so please be gentle with me to start.

So if anyone has any questions??
