Pedal on Parliament Goes Local in 2019

As you might know, PoP 2019 is looking a bit different - new year, new tactics. This year the plan is to shake things up a bit and to put the pressure on Local Authorities- including Edinburgh - to deliver.

We can't do do this without you.

Are you, or could you become, an enthusiastic instigator or invaluable participant? Now is a great chance to find out.

Meeting Thursday 31st January at 18:30 in Sofi's Southside (used to be Southside Social) on Buccleuch Street. Just bring yourself, your ideas and your enthusiasm.

Can't make it? Keep an eye on this topic / the PoP facebook page / twitter acount - this is just a kick off meeting, there will be more opportunities to meet up / get involved.

Got some spray chalk or giant pavement chalks?

Want to indulge in socially responsible non-permanent graffiti?

Quite like bikes and approve of PoP?

Then I have a plan!

Step 1:
Meet 16:30 outside The Bike Station this Saturday armed with your chalks. One lucky person will be entrusted with the shiny new PoP Spray Chalk Stencil.

Step 2:
Head off together to chalk bike paths en masse OR split into teams and head off to chalk bike paths not en masse.

Step 3:
(Re)convene at for a well-deserved pint / fizzy juice / tea at a venue to be decided by participants.

Step 4:
Bask in the warm glow of a job well done / Edinburgh's early summer / moral righteousness. (Those with evening commitments can move directly from Step 2 to Step 4.)

Final PoP planning meeting this Sunday evening, 16:00-18:00 at The Bike Station, Causewayside.

The focus will be on the final big publicity push: flyering, chalking and all that jazz. There will be A5 flyers available to take away, and some A4 posters. (And a very few A3 posters because eejit features here managed to leave those in the office, which is locked all weekend...)

Feedback from previous Pedal on Parliaments has been that the lack of places to pee at the Parliament is a problem. Especally if it's cold, you are young, or older, or had too much coffee (this latter is me, every time). We're not in a position to provide facilities, so would at least like to put together a comprehensive guide to Places to Go along the route and post it on the website. (Will also mean marshals will be able to direct people more easily.)

So: I want to know about every public convenience and every welcoming bar/cafe/venue/museum/gallery/place of worship bog from the Meadows to the Parliament (probable route).

Bonus points for info about accessible toilets & baby changing facilities.

Hi guys,

I'm Head Marshall at POP2014.

We need marshals and first aiders to help out with the event.

Is this you?

Do you want undying glory for all eternity?

Can you bandage a scraped knee?

Can you tell some pedestrians "just hold on a moment until there is a gap" without accidentally exploding?

IF YOU ANSWERED YES, NO, or MAYBE to ANY of the above questions then Marshalling at POP is for you!

We also need riding marshals who will just be part of the group but will help slow the crowd by shouting basically if they see specific things (namely other marshals waving flags)

If you're interested then please comment or PM or e-mail alex at alexdrobertson.com

Cheers!

Also I've no idea whether it's marshal or marshall and I'm too stubborn to google it.

Hello all, we're trying to put together a press release announcing the second Pedal on Parliament and we're planning a photocall outside the Parliament building at 1:30 on Sunday.

Who can make it, ideally with their families? Or if 1:30 is a bad idea what would be a better time on the Sunday, bearing in mind availability of light etc?

All help greatly appreciated!

As you should have picked up by now, we're planning to Pedal on Parliament again next year, only this time it will have to be bigger and better. POP was the massive success it was thanks in huge part to the folk on here who got so involved and put in masses of amounts of time to spread the word. We'll need your support again - but more importantly we need people to get involved in the core organising team, both from within Edinburgh and further afield.

So this is partly an announcement and partly a call to the pub ... On Tuesday it's the Cycling Scotland Conference near Haymarket and a number of us will be there. The plan is to meet up casually afterwards, hopefully all fired up, to discuss the next steps for POP2. We'd welcome anyone who wants to to come along but particularly people who'd be interested in helping out. If we're aiming for the second weekend in May for POP2, then it will be almost exactly 6 months away. Hopefully that will give us time to get something organised that nobody can ignore.

The suggestion at the moment is to meet at the Haymarket bar (unless anyone has a better place that is handy for the station - or a reason why not) early in the evening (we'll probably be there from about 5pm onwards). Anyone and everyone welcome, as long as you're in broad agreement with our manifesto! http://pedalonparliament.org/the-manifesto/

If you can't make it and would still like to help - then let us know.

Hello all!
Tomorrow we're going to be at the end of the PfS route (at Murrayfield) from about 10ish, helping out with the PoP stall. If anyone wants to pop by and say hello (or even volunteer for an hour or so on the stall), let us know!

My phone number is 0777nine527004 - although we won't be there all day, so maybe just visit PoP at the event. The busiest times will be between 12-3, so that's when we'll probably need extra helpers!

Thanks all :D

from Lionfish and Minimoth (sort of on behalf of PoP).

As suggested on http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=6334

These wards are roughly Slateford, Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Dalry, Stenhouse, Shandon, Sighthill, Broomhouse

**Just ideas (feel free to change them!)**
After the council elections, we'll contact all our councillors in these two wards next week, to organise a date for a cycle into town. I guess it makes sense to try to emulate a normal 'commute' as far as possible (so from the ward into the town centre.

The route?
from ~Gorgie road to the Spokes Bike Breakfast? on 20th June (I think).
http://g.co/maps/ansnm (about 3.5 miles, could start further up Gorgie road to shorten route, if necessary).

All the other wards should do something similar and we'll all rendezvous at the bike breakfast! That'll give a bit of an incentive for the councillors (the potential for lots of good publicity with the cycle community, and so make them more likely to agree).

Need to think of a list of particular "points of interest" - i.e. particular local issues on the route that are of most concern (particular bits of parking on bike lanes, or whatever)

What do people think? Which route would you suggest? Should it be done separately for the two wards? Brain storm :)

size of ride: I don't know how many of us are in these wards: More would show the councillors how we feel!(ironically lots of us would allow a feeling of safety in numbers and I'd like the councillors to get a taste of solo riding in Edinburgh too :P).

No video yet, but both STV and BBC have PoP stories up.

Both of them talk of "hundreds" of cyclists. We now know that "thousands" would have been more accurate, so I assume that these stories were written before the event. I hope they'll be corrected.
