The way this is going, I'll be joining TJ and just pedal round the wheel all weekend, like the good little hamster I am! That way I won't miss anything... 'flash-mob' or official romp with POP2! Hhmm! thinks? If there is date confusion already then folk will turn up both days anyway by default (human nature?). I think my little hamster brain is going to burst... arrghhh!

Sunday though is the normal day to 'drive your car and park on cycle lanes'.
The fact that cyclists will converge en masse in the Meadows will still be noted by people driving.
Those that use public transport won't notice delays as badly. Despite our 24/7 economy bus services on a Sunday are so infrequent on some routes you are quicker walking (or even using a car if you have one).

As someone who is intending to come to POP2 with the entire famly (2 boys, aged 6 and 6 months at that point) I'd definitely support your efforts to get buy in from the other players in this - I wasn't there last year, but it really sounds as if the support from the Police and others made a huge difference. I'd certainly see this as a worthwhile goal for the POP team, and if running the event on the Sunday can achieve this, then that seems to me to be an ideal outcome. Best of luck with negotiations!

Well, right or wrong, we had to come to a decision and I don't think it was unreasonable to compromise. Sure we *could* exercise our rights of lawful protest and bring Edinburgh to a halt, but not if we wanted to bring families along. Our judgement was that we could also make the same point while keeping some allies on side - which actually includes the police, who were very complimentary about last year's POP.

I know people feel very passionately about POP and have a real sense of ownership of it especially on this forum but we do have to juggle lots of different factors while coming to these decisions - and I can assure you that we do not come to them lightly. Whether those decisions are right or wrong, I don't know - but we're doing the best we can. All we can ask is that people step back and see the bigger picture and I don't think there's much more powerful than the huge numbers of children that turned out last year. Surely that leaves a better lasting impression than a traffic snarl up or chaos on the buses?

Those of us who put POP together this time and last time put a huge amount of effort into it, we all have day jobs and families as well, we do it because we care passionately about making Scotland fit for cycling. Not one of us had done anything similar until last year and we're still making it up as we go along. We really appreciate the support we get from CCE folk, and it's good to get feedback on how people feel, but please do bear in mind that we're human and doing the best we can. And if you've got ideas on how to make POP better and want to join in the fun - feel free to join us. You have nothing to lose but your sleep, your sanity, and your remaining free time

:-)

Website was updated last night to say 'weekend of 18th May' - we will confirm the date when we have formal agreement as we can't keep chopping and changing dates and times - I'm sorry about all this, but it's a complex situation and there are lots of competing priorities to take into account - and it's not just about getting permissions, although for a family-friendly protest like POP that is a big part of it.

Of course there would be nothing to stop people from organising their own POP any day of the week they choose, or indeed all of them. But bear in mind that the more people who turn up on POP the more powerful it is, so please do join us on the day we finally announce.

Dear Tarmac jockey and friends. If you read beyond the headline, you'll find the following explanation:

If you've been paying close attention to the website, you'll have noticed that we've slightly modified our information about the date of the POP2 ride - rather than the 18th May, we are now saying that it will take place on the weekend of the 18th May. Please bear with us - we should be making a further announcement extremely soon but we can't quite confirm the date just yet.

The reason is that, although POP is a protest, it's very much a family one: if kids can't safely ride their bikes in Scotland then we'll never be a cycle-friendly nation, so it's their protest as much as anyone's. Protests don't have to be confrontational - and we're working hard to make sure that we get the same carnival atmosphere that we enjoyed last year. We also don't want to disrupt the good people of Edinburgh any more than we can possibly help so we're working closely with the police, the council and representatives from the bus companies to keep the disruption to a minimum. The benefit of this approach is that we should be able to ride this year on completely closed roads - eliminating any risk from an impatient driver. The downside is we probably won't be able to hold it on the original day we planned, the 18th, but on the Sunday instead.

We're disappointed at having to consider changing at this late stage - but that's the way the world goes, and it should mean that we can keep the fantastic route we had last year, right through the historic heart of Edinburgh. We'll be keeping you informed as soon as we know more but for now please watch this space - or sign up for our email updates - and as soon as we know, you will know

Together we can make Scotland a cycle-friendly nation.

Dear Cllr Hinds,

Pedal on Parliament Protest Saturday 18th May 2013

As Convener for Transport, I really hope you will fully support this protest to be held on the Saturday 18th May, which requires to take a route through the centre of the City to draw attention to the plight of cyclists in this City, having to deal with poorly designed infrastructure and the high risks of urban traffic mixing with vulnerable cycle traffic. This protest is about making people all over Scotland aware of the daily risks cyclists take on our roads, just do do the most basic travel activities eg taking the kids to school, or commuting to work in a sustainable and healthy way! It may be that your Events Champion and Depute Cllr Cardownie might see this protest of over 3,000 mixed persons in the City as an ideal 'event' opportunity, that could be capitalised on by getting City of Edinburgh Council to actively support it.

I must also draw your attention to the fact that Andrew McNicoll, who was sadly killed on Lanark Road whilst commuting into the city centre, was the son of an employee of the City of Edinburgh Council, and I append his mother's blog from Pedal on Parliament website (below) as a pivotal statement on the state of affairs in this City. This statement has many words of wisdom, and is a telling statement on the parlous state of our infrastructure for all users.
It is sad that despite all the promises by CEC, Active Travel Action Plans, cycling initiatives, and failed investment in un-enforceable Quality Cycle Corridors etc, that the internal combustion engine still rules the minds of the officials in the Council.
I will welcome the advent of the trams as it will act as a traffic calming measure if nothing else! It might even get people out of their cars and entice them to use public transport more effectively!
My daily commute by bike in this City is becoming ever more risky and complex, and I appeal to you to get your colleagues to rally and get our act together for a safe and sustainable future for all, commuters, families, schoolchildren and tourists.

I do hope you take this note seriously please?

@ Sallyhinch... you are absolutely right, re-read the Cooncil's ATAP! Then roll it up and stick it in Dear Hind's ear!

So chdot!, if the punters are all parked up on the single yellows and cycling lanes then POP2 will be forced even further into the crown of the road thus creating equally as much traffic chaos as it might on a Saturday when restrictions in City Centre are enforced! Interesting spin-off concept! The invention of the Venturi Pipe illustrates this well... if you deliberately narrow a pipe you have to push a gas or liquid volume through faster at higher pressure to achieve the same result as through a wide bore pipe...

Pretty much every local policy document you read about transport starts with a nice piece of cut and pasted boilerplate about considering the needs of pedestrians first, followed by bikes, buses, and finally cars. Followed usually by a proposal that reflects exactly the opposite set of priorities. A particularly brazen one here actually went on to suggest removing a pavement from one side of a bridge (which didn't carry buses) to increase through traffic. Presumably the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers were all being considered there by encouraging them to drive their cars like normal people...

@SRD Expansion of your point.

In my honest opinion here is the pecking order that should be in place:

1st Creatures (incl humans and horses etc).
2nd Cycles (including motor assisted ones).
3rd Internal combustion engine with driven wheels.
4th Taxis.

(This happens to be the Darwinian Order of colonizing this planet by coincidence!)

Its a bit like the 'Law of the Air' Section IV Part 9 !
If you see wot I mean!
