Response from Craigleith re the bad access detail email I sent earlier:
"We note your concerns and would agree that the entire Shopping Park could benefit from better cycle facilities. However, please note that Craigleith Shopping Park and Sainsbury’s fall under separate ownership. The areas referred to falls under Sainsbury’s ownership and any improvements will require their consideration. For information and ease of reference I’ve attached a layout plan (not to scale) showing our boundary lines.

Of course we are fully committed to providing our customers with a safe and pleasant shopping experience, please rest assured that we would raise your concerns with Sainsbury’s and investigate the possibility of perhaps resolving the issues with a combined effort."

TL;DR that bit is not our responsibility, it's Sainsbury's.

across the new Toucan crossing, and thence into the park. However after the crossing it is not at all cycle friendly. The choice is to either wiggle around on a narrow overgrown segment with pedestrians, ending up at a tight turn onto the road just after the roundabout, or to bump down off the kerb (not safe, especially for bikes without suspension), into busy traffic, and then have to do an immediate left-wiggle

I did it once before but on my visit this week I reckoned it was easier/safer to stay on the road. Of course that's not the answer as your nasty pothole experience and the tortuous route ensures that cycles are a rare sight. Bike parking right outside the shops is easy - but only if you have a kickstand!

I have gone on the Craigleith website and sent them a comment thusly:
"I hope you can improve cycle access to the park. I regularly visit by bike, coming from the excellent Roseburn cycle path, across the new Toucan crossing, and thence into the park. However after the crossing it is not at all cycle friendly. The choice is to either wiggle around on a narrow overgrown segment with pedestrians, ending up at a tight turn onto the road just after the roundabout, or to bump down off the kerb (not safe, especially for bikes without suspension), into busy traffic, and then have to do an immediate left-wiggle to avoid the trolley-trap on the road. Getting out is even worse, as it's not safe to reverse that latter route, and the former is just as bad. Please can you investigate, and improve the facilities for cyclists. "

Ouch. :(
Thanks for the info about the site managers though; I have been wanting to grumble at someone about the rubbish access on the West side, where bikes come over a lovely new Toucan crossing, only to be fed into a narrow overgrown ped-path or forced to bump down off a kerb and then do an immediate wiggle to avoid the trolley-trap. And getting out is even worse.

Snagged by a bad pothole, leaving Craigleith Retail Park. It's on the bike lane next to the knobbly 'anti-trolley-theft' bit. Was dark at the time, and the hole was completely hidden by rainwater, so impossible to see.

Stopped my bike dead, managed to escape with only a sore bum. Tyres, wheels hopefully okay, getting a service today anyway which was fortuitous.

Have reported to Clarence, and Cushman Wakefield, who manage the park, the latter has replied saying they're 'looking into it'. I cycle around 15 miles a day, dodging potholes left right and centre, can't believe I was stumped by one in a car park whilst going 10mph. Grr!

the 40 year old mini also costs a shed load less to maintain, my honda cost me £400 for a new catalytic converter and a further £400 for back exhuast when my escort cost me £55 for the whole assembly... also the insurance is crazy cheap, however it doesn't have seatbelts in the back and none can be fitted as it was the last model to leave the production line before they even thought of adding the achor points that future belts could attach to... so it is far away from being a "family car" and as such gets left to sit until I need to somewhere solo beyond the range of bike and too far from a train station

Apparently the "third part" they sent it to are not lawyers and it didn't cost a penny to the council

20 working days for a response, remember. If it goes beyond that, or if you have a case for being unhappy with (traditionally, the lack of) information released, you're entitled to ask them to conduct an independent review, which may or may not find in your favour. You could even then raise an entirely new FOI request for sight of the review document...which isn't quite in the spirit of the FOISA but is allowed, and on it goes.
