XR Rig Rebellion: Protest the Scottish Oil Club

Friday, 8 March 2019 from 17:00-21:00
Outside the National Museum Scotland, Chambers Street

Music from The Auld Reekie String Band, The Edinburgh Uni Folk Society, The Micro Band, Protest In Harmony and more to be announced!
Powered by the PortaVibe HI FI soundsystem!

This is the sending off celebration for the fossil fuel industry!

On Friday 8th of March, the Scottish Oil Club, an exclusive body representing the international oil and gas industry, will hold their annual celebratory dinner at the National Museum of Scotland. 890 fossil fuel industry leaders will celebrate the success of their trade and network to further its interests.

A major driver of the climate emergency, the fossil fuel industry should not be celebrated, and definitely not on International Women’s Day. Women across the globe are on the front line of facing climate chaos, while rarely being the drivers of it.

Spokes and Living Streets have been invited to a meeting with the Tram programme (that is now in charge of Leith Walk) to discuss options. I would welcome feedback/suggestions that we can take to the meeting - mcdbristol116@gmail.com

The invitation and a couple of PS's are copied below. The original layout is viewable at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1H7eUmpXxKHApy0Tm8scw9zNv5P7UGMm2
I don't recall these drawings being published previously.

The Orca's were removed a week or so back with no consultation. Afterwards, they were said to be a trial - the Terms of Reference and success/failure criteria unknown. Glasgow have trialled similar with different options and wrote a whole report - although I've only found the trial definition online.

Apparently as well as the incidents mentioned in Spokes' Tweet pedestrians had been tripping over them and were in danger of falling into moving traffic!

Can anyone post some pictures of what was installed?

The meeting invite:

As part of the Leith Programme, new cycle ways have recently gone live on Leith Walk, along with the ‘two-stage right turn’ at McDonald Road to help less confident cyclists turn right safely.
To help make it clear where the cycle lane meets the general traffic road space, ‘soft segregation’ in the form of ‘Orca’ lane separators were introduced on a trial basis at a number of locations.

However, this four-week trial highlighted that the Orcas may pose an increased safety risk for pedestrians, with reports of some safety issues from pedestrians and cyclists. The Orcas have subsequently been removed and Transport Convener, Councillor Lesley Macinnes, has instructed Council officers to carry out an options analysis to find the most appropriate way of both helping cyclists feel safe while using the dedicated lane and minimising any trip risk for pedestrians. Cllr Macinnes has asked me to lead this.

A small working group consisting of those copied above met earlier this week to discuss options and agreed that input from SPOKES and Living Streets into discussions at an early stage would be very helpful. I am therefore looking to arrange a meeting for some time next week for us to discuss the options and hopefully reach a consensus.

PS Please find attached drawing showing the orcas and where they were installed during trial period. The purpose of installing the orcas was to delineate where the cycle lane meets the general traffic road space and were not installed as a safety measure.

PPS What l meant was the orcas were not installed at these locations in response to any specific safety concern, I agree they are used as a protection measure.

As suggested on http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=6334

These wards are roughly Slateford, Gorgie, Craiglockhart, Dalry, Stenhouse, Shandon, Sighthill, Broomhouse

**Just ideas (feel free to change them!)**
After the council elections, we'll contact all our councillors in these two wards next week, to organise a date for a cycle into town. I guess it makes sense to try to emulate a normal 'commute' as far as possible (so from the ward into the town centre.

The route?
from ~Gorgie road to the Spokes Bike Breakfast? on 20th June (I think).
http://g.co/maps/ansnm (about 3.5 miles, could start further up Gorgie road to shorten route, if necessary).

All the other wards should do something similar and we'll all rendezvous at the bike breakfast! That'll give a bit of an incentive for the councillors (the potential for lots of good publicity with the cycle community, and so make them more likely to agree).

Need to think of a list of particular "points of interest" - i.e. particular local issues on the route that are of most concern (particular bits of parking on bike lanes, or whatever)

What do people think? Which route would you suggest? Should it be done separately for the two wards? Brain storm :)

size of ride: I don't know how many of us are in these wards: More would show the councillors how we feel!(ironically lots of us would allow a feeling of safety in numbers and I'd like the councillors to get a taste of solo riding in Edinburgh too :P).
