That is excellent to hear. Just took a closer look at the route, and if they start at 7:30, the bulk of them should have cleared the Innocent Path by around 08:00, 08:30, so it's almost definitely not worth diverting when I come through a little later. I didn't make a note of the times on the sign when I was there – does that match up with their estimates?

Thanks, everyone!

I've encountered it in previous years (but possibly not whilst cycling myself) and don't have any particularly unpleasant memories; more just a degree of bemusement.

The path should be fine. I used to do the survival of the fittest event which posted this one. It may be a bit busier than usual but no need to divert.

Signs on the aqueduct too - 9.30 til 13.00 so if starts to the west at 9.30 think it will be the return that will be your issue @lingcat

Edit - ah maybe not, innocent being used at start and finish? Cheeky blighters.

There's a sign up at the St Leonard's end of the Innocent Tunnel about the path being used for the Rat Race (http://ratrace.com/ute/route/) next Sunday.

I normally cycle out to Portobello on Sunday mornings for a swim and don't fancy having to bypass that stretch of path to take on the drivers speeding down empty Sunday morning roads – if this event's been held here before, has anyone encountered it? Or anyone planning to take part and know a little bit more about it? It's an ultra-marathon, so I'm wondering if the crowds might be scant enough for the path to still be useable. Any info would be helpful!

How do you pronounce her name then? is it Sh-Anaze given the capital A which is not standard in the middle of a name.

"Cycling has the "everyone can be a pro" aspect to it I think."

Mmmmndunno. Millions of small children of either gender, exposed to near-ubiquitous references to association shoutball in popular media and the relative accessibility of the equipment and facilities, see that they only need to 1: be able to play football reasonably well and 2: male in order to be able to progress to the highest level. There are even people actively trawling to recruit promising youngsters, with the result that my nephew is now in some sort of youth team thing, at which point the additional requirements of 3: being prepared to allocate all remaining available spare time to training and 4: having parents with the time/resources to cart/send you all over the country and beyond to attend performances against other youth team things became apparent.

Cycling, meanwhile, requires more equipment from the very beginning, give or take some tradeoff between fanciness of equipment/availability of facilities between disciplines. It seems like there may be more/greater barriers earlier on, as well as the same dedication/selection/patronage stuff further up.

"if we really want to get people into cycling then there is a danger that making it look too pro puts people off."

I'm not sure about that. Thousands of small boys around the country playing football in the park and at school don't seem to be put off by the fact that the pro's are rather untouchable and (for the most part) also complete asshats.

Cycling has the "everyone can be a pro" aspect to it I think. Whether you're a pro-team rider, a pro CXer, a pro commuter or even a pro-recumbanteer!

Good to get into the first heat rust. Not so many people turn up to these events for fun these days you can be sure!

On a recumbent you could certainly do it but really just to show it can be done rather than do a 'time'. It's all about 'out-comforting' uprights you see! I have cycled right up Ramsay Lane to castle just for the 'fun' of it.

I do plan to do the SCMA longer hill challenge at EdFoC. I know it will take 4 mins up to Dunsapie Loch and the elite can do it in 2mins - but so what. if we really want to get people into cycling then there is a danger that making it look too pro puts people off.

Most 'bents have to drop down through the gears (bit like a tandem). Too many changes mean you lose your cadence. The real 'semi-pros' can do a course like this and maintain cadence throughout with one click down on the corner I reckon. Or no clicks if they ride single speed!

I scraped through the qualificiation and then crashed out my first heat - I was on the inside and a guy cut across and hit me, I over corrected and ended up hitting the barriers on the other side taking another rider out along the way.

It was a good night's entertainment. Not especially mobbed, but enough of a crowd to get an atmosphere - especially good that they had a big screen - although cold and windy.

Here's us in from earlier...

Given we were moving twice the weight and 3 times the number of people, I'm happy with our result and we weren't last!!!
