I trust everyone's aware that FRB is shut today 4-6pm approx

https://www.facebook.com/LothiansScottishBordersPoliceDivision/posts/1662919963956508

Police Scotland, Amey, the Forth Road Bridge and Traffic Scotland can confirm that officers will shortly close the M90 and the Forth Road Bridge in both directions.
The road is due to close at approximately 4pm for at least two hours. All approaches will also be closed.
This is following the discovery of materials believed to be used in the demolition process at the site of the new Forth Road Bridge (Queensferry Crossing).

Although there is no immediate danger to the public, a decision has been made to dispose of these materials with the assistance of the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit (EOD) and to close the road as a precaution during this time.

The Forth Rail Bridge will also close temporarily while the controlled explosion takes place. We are working with British Transport Police and Network Rail to facilitate this.

Police are advising members of the public who wish to travel on this road to postpone or bring forward their travel plans as the road is expected to be closed between 4pm and 6pm.

These times are approximate and can be brought forward or pushed back.

I think leaving the bridge open to traffic for this is a big mistake, it'll be too tempting for many people to try to drive across. The mayhem on the roads will be entertaining though.

Local access only- It means that there'll be 1000 drivers per hour trying to be 'clever' outsmarting the official diversion by driving into Queensferry. Given there's several areas of single car width passing on any route to the bridge, mostly due to on street parking, I wouldn't be surprised to see a genuine gridlock situation develop.

(Although, amusingly, I noticed that the definition also notes, appropriately in this case: "Origin

late 15th century (denoting a gaping void or chasm, later formless primordial matter): via French and Latin from Greek khaos 'vast chasm, void'." :-)

Glad that I headed home relatively early last night else I could have easily fallen in... The council dug up and filled in several underground 'vaults' on my road nearby last year, which were at one point cellars that belonged to the tenement blocks or so I gathered; it seemed a bit of a shame to be losing out on the space that presumably belonged technically to the owners of the flats in some way, but I was mostly just glad that the council paid...

Cycled along Lauriston Place and through the new trafic free Forrest Road this morning. Thought it was a great initiative.

Usual idiot drivers passing "Road Closed Ahead" notices, and then having to attempt to U-turn into traffic when they reach the barrier. Keep seeing the same thing at St Peter's Place.

"Initial indications were that the hole was eight-foot deep, although police said it could be much shallower."

Saw tweets from the Police last night, part of the road had subsided.

Wonder if there's something interesting under there?

It's about time something was done about that road anyway, rather than have it as a car park / gyratory system free-for-all.

It would make a huge amount of sense to close off Forrest Road to through traffic (bikes excepted) and replace the triangle of roads with a T using Bristo Place.
