Interesting approach. But also nightmare fuel, erk.

interactive lifelike sculpture [that] imagines what humans might look like had we evolved to withstand low-impact car crashes.

Commissioned last year by The Transport Accident Commission in Victoria, Australia to demonstrate human vulnerability in traffic accidents, Graham was made by Melbourne artist Patricia Piccinini in collaboration with leading trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield and crash investigation expert Dr David Logan. [...] His enlarged skull is filled with extra cerebrospinal fluid and ligaments to protect the brain, while the neck – one of the most vulnerable body parts in a collision – has been removed entirely. Sacks have been placed between each of his ribs to create airbag-like cushioning and extra joints in his legs allow him to jump out of the way quickly.

"He was the catalyst for conversation around the forces involved in common car-crash scenarios and highlighted just how vulnerable our bodies are to high speeds – a concept often complex and hard to communicate," she said.

Someone I've known for years and who seems like a generally sensible, kind and considerate person just posted this in the comments of her own social media update. Worst thing is that everyone else is mostly agreeing that, indeed, it's a good thing the CAR wasn't damaged. Whereas all I can think of is what happens if someone driving 1+ tonnes of metal fails to stop at a junction I'm crossing because they briefly nodded off... I have left what I hope is a diplomatic but clear response. And of course now I feel like I'm being preachy! But, argh! This general notion that it's all just a bit of an oopsie to fall asleep in charge of a potentially deadly machine - is there any hope of changing it? What I really wanted to say, but didn't, is - if you're so tired that falling asleep at the wheel is a risk PLEASE GET THE BUS.

As I haven't had a proper night's sleep since last Thursday, I momentarily feel asleep at the wheel on my way to {appointment} this morning and hit a traffic island {...} - luckily there doesn't seem to be any damage to the wheel or tyre but I REALLY need to get a night's sleep!

Min on "New road safety pledge"

Spotted this article buried on the BBC website.

Slightly encouraging and yet rather depressing at the same time.

"Evidence has shown that regular risky and illegal drivers do not acknowledge the risk they present, or view their own actions as illegal or having any real social impact," he said.

Along with-

A recent study stated that almost three-quarters of all drivers admitted to risky driving behaviour in the last 12 months and more than half of those admitted to illegal behaviour in relation to speeding, mobile phones and seatbelt use.

And this explains a lot-

There is a common perception among offenders that offences are committed by others, but not by themselves.

And finally, not that I would ever go on to the EEN but I have always wanted to point this out to the people who complain "why don't the police go after real criminals?"

However, it is worth remembering that in 2012, 174 people died on our roads - three times more than the homicide rate.

Because real criminals don't kill nearly as many people? ::-(

In that empty-headed time riding in to work I was thinking about the numbers killed or seriously injured.

They were falling steadily until 2004 and then started creeping back up again. They're the highest they've been for 10 years.

Collins atlas rates five Scottish A roads 'high risk'
Five A-class routes in Scotland have been rated as a high risk to safety in a new roads atlas.

The 2012 Collins Big Road Atlas shows the A708, A937, A70, A809 and A81 as the most dangerous based on serious and fatal accidents between 2007 and 2009.

Solution = spend more money on roads. Straighter, wider and faster roads = safer.

SNP spending £500,000 working out the best way to spend more money on the A82.
