Starting July 2025 for two months. Works for erosion prevention.

City of Edinburgh Council wrote:

"I write to inform you of upcoming improvement works along the Water of Leith between Roseburn Cliff and Wester Coates. These works will help prevent erosion from the banking and provide protection to the water of Leith Walkway while also continuing to provide vital habitat for the diverse plant and animal life within the river corridor.

The works are due to commence in July, a start date will be confirmed in due course. Works will take approximately two months to complete. During this time, the section of the Water of Leith Walkway between Roseburn Cliff and Wester Coates, including the access path to/from Wester Coates Gardens, will be closed to all pedestrians and cyclists.

It is recognised that these works will cause disruption to local residents, I apologise for the inconvenience these works will cause but hope that you will appreciate the greater long-term benefits of this project and encourage all users, for their safety and the safety or our contractors, to respect the closure and use an alternative route."

I will be cycling this route tonight so that i can comment on this thread in detail tomorrow with my findings... Sounds interesting. Non cyclists just do not understand cycling in the cones ! :/

I cycled in this way this morning and agree that cycling up the side of the roadworks with the cones on my right was ok, just got to watch out when you merge back with traffic. I was also impressed with the original road surface, not a mark in it and not a hole in sight. With that kind of base it makes you wonder what rubbish they are using to lay the roads.

Dear All

Over the weekend the west coates access to the NEPN, roseburn terrace/kew gardens junction are restricted by the 1 lane east and west roadworks on the A8. Please note that the workies have helpfully left the roadworks signs in the Eastbound cycle lane, also i found cycling inside the coned off area safer than mixing it with the laned traffic. There is plenty room to move safely and your nowhere near the roadworks.
You can see they have stripped the tarmac back the original setts, interesting.

Hope all the injuries heal soon enough - along with the hurt pride!

So far that bike lane as cause three punctures, an ice induced paint scraper (serves me right for skinny tyres) and broken collar bone/scapula. All in the space of three months!

I was sorry to see the aftermath of the accident this morning before the ambulance arrived - when I passed a number of fellow cyclists were already assisting. Billy was being helped to his feet (not in the First Response manual that one) and being held up and he looked seriously dazed, bloodied and battered and no doubt in shock.

I hope he recovers from his injuries soon. Nasty fall.

I think at times like this its good to reflect on some of the words from Captain Lance Murdock. "Bones heal. Chicks dig scars."

Get well soon Billy.

(I hope the bike turns up.)

Sorry to read about Billy's injury and loss of bike! I saw the tree cutters on Thursday and a few weeks earlier along the path nr the water of leith. I'm glad they are thining out the tree cover but its needed as some lights in the Craigleith area are obsqured by tree cover. I saw Harts van too. There was a guy cyclist stood next to the side door. At least the van was off the track.

Don't wish to sound smug but my studded Schwabe snow tyres make short work of the muddy sections.

Eeps. Nasty. Doubt there was any ice there this morning but there's plenty of mud been dragged onto the path by the tree-thinning squad and the giant van which was lurking by Sainsbury's access this evening. Whereabouts exactly was the incident?

I put in a call to FixMyStreet a couple of weeks ago requesting that last autumn's rotting leaf litter be swept up - just as you come onto the track from Roseburn. Nothing done last time I came down on Friday

'Reported in the Street cleaning category anonymously at 07:14, Tuesday 29 January 2013

The Roseburn to Blackhall cycle track is particularly muddy and slippy especially at the Roseburn end. This is due to unswept leaf debris rotting down to create a layer of mulch.'

Fair point Blueth, That's a bit of a nightmare situation. I almost had a (surprisingly large) bunny wabbit under my wheels this morning which could have been a bit of a nightmare - not sure what would have happened if I'd hit it.

Also really hope his bike turns up and his face gets better fast. Horrible injury.

I don't mean to be funny, and I'm glad to hear that he is fit enough to get out, but I once had a near incident on the path due to a squirrel running out and missing my wheel by a hairsbreadth. Could be something equally impossible to assess on viewing the scene that was the cause here.

Then there was the time a police car pulled on to the path from behind a hedge without the driver looking properly.

Billy lost his two front teeth, smashed his nose, and took general facial damage. He got the full works at the Western, and probably will be allowed home tonight. It sounds very much that he went over his handlebars - tree debris in the spokes could be the cause, but was there any lingering ice around that might have caused the fall? He can't remember anything.

And to round off a bad day, someone offered to take his bike to the hospital ... who can't find it.

Looked like a serious incident on the path at about 7.35-7.45. Rider with nasty looking head injury lying in recovery position to the side. Bikes stopped on either side taking care. No obvious reason - no other mangled bikes or injured riders. Guessing perhaps tree debris in spokes but only because I've been avoiding twigs and branches left over from tree thinning recently. Hope the guy's OK.
