That was inevitable as soon as the Torries got in, did they learn nothing from the farce they left the railway in...

i wonder if we gave posties the choice of what bike to ride maybe they'd like it better? I wouldn't mind delivering letters on this: http://www.bonthronebikes.co.uk/515-226377

costs about the same as a van too!

For every postman and woman who hates their bicycle, there's one that loves them," a union spokesperson said.

I've swapped over the love and hate and now reads like an endorsement.

Anyway the real safety issue is the risk to public from post vans driven badly.

I'm sure that the figures for postie's hurt and unfortunately killed in service using bike is a fraction of the total for the entire service. Anyone care to hazard a guess at how many have foot injuries due to breaking in new boots? How many delivery vans are involved in collisions each year?
Doesn't make sense, let them use delivery bikes if that is how they would like to carry out their duties. Give the postie's the choice.

Seriously? They've backed the bikes being cut because maybe half of those using the bikes don't like them???

And as you say, 13 deaths over 15 years - it would be very very interesting to see how that stacked up with other deaths within the service.

BBC news article

I'm sure there's not much merit in starting a "debate" about the merits, or otherwise, of the Royal Mail's decision and it's Union backing. However we could start one about the "evidence" provided by the Union.

For every postman and woman who loves their bicycle, there's one that hates them," a union spokesperson said.

Okay, let's get rid of half the bicycles then. And I'm sure that there's 100% love factor for their LDV vans.

"We fully support the changes for improved efficiency, safety and environmental performance.

Yes - 24,000 bicycles off the road and replaced by van journeys will really increase environmental performance. And for those replaced by walking posties, that will really increase efficiency and safety.

The union said that 13 cycle delivery postmen and women had been killed at work over the past 15 years, and thousands more injured as the result of road traffic accidents.

Of course all the figures above are a tragedy, but there is no mention of the number of postmen and women killed and injured in traffic accidents, walking posties killed crossing the road, or other workplace industrial accidents (which I'd wager must happen a lot in such a mechanised, fast moving environment)

And do we even have cycling posties in Embra? I don't remember ever seeing one around Bruntsfield / Marchmont neck of the woods.
