Well if drivers can’t be trusted...

Drivers have had 137 years to learn to control their infernal machines safely, and have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they cannot.

I was hit there during the first lockdown - car cut the corner and my forearm took the wing mirror clean off, depositing me on the ground. Driver stopped and got out (still smoking a cig, natch) and appeared not to have clue what she had done, had to be told by me and a passing pedestrian who was frankly stroppier about it than I was. As the driver was a uniformed carer and given the times then, I didn't take it any further. Had a golf ball on my arm for weeks after.

Hope today's victim is OK.

Well if drivers can’t be trusted…

Time to shut the road (people had to ‘manage’ when they built the tram bridge).

In time for the new link to Dalry would be good.

I stopped to check on a fellow cyclist who had been hit by a car on Russell Rd (btwn the access to Roseburn Path & the railway bridge).I hope he’s ok. I waited until the ambulance appeared; he said he didn’t think his leg was broken but he couldn’t stand up

The cyclist said he had been waiting to turn & the car driver wasn’t paying attention & hit him. Poor guy was quite dazed but said he hadn’t hit his head. I’m hoping someone might have some news on his status?

Car, ambulance and police car parked up at bottom of zigzag onto the NEPN. Bike leaning against wall. Not sure what had gone on, but the right turn from RR to the zigzag can be terrifying if Dalry bound vehicles cut the corner. Pure speculation though. Hope all ok.

yeah that was quite the surprise on sunday as they just blocked off the road with no prior notice. Still means the road is a bit quieter at night. Still dozens of people trying to get through int he morning despite road closed "access only" signs.

Roseburn Street having surfaces redone and local access only at stadium end. So congestion now banks up along Russell Road from Muireston Crescent/Gorgie Road junction. Everything backed up in that part of town now.

The junction at the north end with Roseburn Street is a nightmare

Agree. Council have tried to put a lane on the pavement to provide an inconvenient bypass for cyclists (requiring a wierd S-turn through a traffic island and a switch of direction to get into Roseburn Gardens!) however with more than 2 or 3 cars queuing at the junction it's impossible to access the cycle lane.

Likewise turning right out of Roseburn Street, it's very hard to see what's about to come round the corner and there is no light/filter to indicate its safe to make a right turn. Very few vehicles make this turn as they can only approach from Roseburn Street (as there's no cut-through of Roseburn Gardens/Place if you approach from the West). It only works as a rat run if you come off Rosburn Terrace or West Coates.

I'd be happy with Min's solution of a full-length cycle lane and let everyone else have fun fighting it out.

Russell Road itself would easily contain a segregated cycle lane the full length, the only constriction is the viaduct which would be more complicated to do something about.

Just have one side for motorists and the other for cyclists. Obviously the side for motorists wouldn't be wide enough to drive both ways at the viaduct but they could just put up a sign there saying "road ends, motorists get out and push".

Problem Solved.

When we used to live in Newington and worked by / over the Forth Bridge, the best way to commute was to drive all the way in to Russell Rd and rat run it.

Since it was shut for such a long period of time without anyone dying, you'd think it would be easy to justify making it one way with a full-time, two-way, world class cycle facility on the other half.

Connecting NEPN with Dalry and onwards towards the canal etc.

Will never happen.

The junction at the north end with Roseburn Street is a nightmare. It would be better if all roads were traffic-light controlled so you wouldn't get all the cars and vans desperate to turn right and get into the traffic queues on Roseburn Street.

Coming from Roseburn park and trying to turn right onto Russell Road is a bit hairy when it's busy.

Russell Road itself isn't really a "residential" road, but to get out of it at either end without going down Mcleod Street, you have to go through the Murieston Triangle, which most definitely is a residential area (it's even got a playpark in the central bit!)

My main points on it would be;

Murieston is too narrow for the volume of traffic that uses it (both directions, rush hour only), this includes lorries and vans.

Russell Road itself would easily contain a segregated cycle lane the full length, the only constriction is the viaduct which would be more complicated to do something about. It has parking on both sides, reasonably wide pavements and room to spare still. It could and should extend from the current ride-on-the-pavement section from end of the Roseburn Path.

I think it would be less attractive to westbound traffic if the Roseburn Gardens cut-through was dealt with. There's very little excuse for that being maintained.

I think it's an attractive route for traffic trying to get to/from the West Approach Road and the A8 / Glasgow / Corstorphine / St John's Road corridor, avoiding Balgreen.

There has been conversations on this forum about the problems with Russell Road, poor driving, rat run etc.

Agree there is certainly a issue there, however stepping back, why is it a rat run? IMO probably because it is one of the few routes north-south that avoids the city centre without going too far west. It used to be possible(+20years ago) to drive through Westfield Road and Robertson Avenue both ways.

Is their access status contributing to the Russell road rat run? I consider as certainly possible.
