Yup, Cole-Hamilton has tweeted stating that they are not allowed, unless delivered by Royal Mail.

Of course that hasn't stopped him from putting them through doors on non-delivery days.

cc on "saddle for upright bike?"

Thanks a lot everyone. I have to confess that I rushed out last night straight after work and bought myself a saddle - a Specialized Expedition Gel saddle from the Bike Co-op. Once I'd got it into the right position (as far back as possible and tipped down to the rear so I don't slide forwards) it was very comfortable.

I chose the Specialized because with the old saddle I found that, comfortable as it was, I couldn't go for more than half a dozen miles without starting to get all numb and tingly in the unmentionables, which can be very off-putting. The Specialized is one of those saddles with a groove down the middle - should solve that problem. Time (and distance) will tell me how well that works. I see that Selle Royal does similar saddles, and Gazelle saddles are also grooved to a lesser degree.

Re Brooks saddles - when I bought the bike it was offered with a Brooks saddle and I turned that down in favour of a standard Dutch saddle (quite possibly a Selle Royal). I know Brooks saddles come highly recommended but I wanted something I could leave out in the rain on a busy street without it getting either ruined or nicked.

Ed1 - that's a seriously impressive discount.

Thanks everyone for your help and offers of help.

Selle Royal are good: that's what I have on the Pashley Pronto and it's the right blend of comfort and suspension. Good and broad too without being too wide.

Can get you any Gazelle bike saddle. The Brooks saddles on their Classic bikes are normally B67S and they have modern saddles for their upright bikes which are Selle Royale of various (wide) types. I don't hold stock, but if you let me know what you're after I can get them in in a couple of days.

I need shopping advice.

The saddle of my (very) upright Dutch bike suffered a wee accident yesterday - it became unmoored at the front end. The <strike>doctors</strike> Cycle Service tell me there's no hope and that I should get a replacement.

Where would you suggest I look? Since the bike is upright I'll be wanting a saddle that's very wide and quite strong. I'm hoping for a shop in Edinburgh, but all ideas are welcome.

I used the Arione VS for audax and had a similar experience where it was fine for about 100 miles but then became a bit sore. It does contain what I have dubbed the "scrote moat" which is a vital part for me for being able to continue to have children after hours in the saddle... (apologies for the crass term to those of your with sensitive eyes)

I've had an Arione Tri and a standard Arione. The Tri was very comfortable. It had a softer nose I think. I wrecked it in a crash. The replacement, a standard Arione was, for the first ten miles, just as all the reviews promised at the time: super comfortable, like a Brooks but a fraction of the weight. But past ten miles it just got more and more uncomfortable. I gave it away and switched to a different make entirely.

Thanks for the comments about patents, IP etc.! I've registered a design with the IPO which "protects any aspect of your design, for example both the product’s shape and decoration". This costs just £50 and has may fewer legal challenges than patents which I reckon would take me many months before I could put the product on sale and a fair amount of investment.

Thanks for the heads up about the Spokes post on Facebook, was wondering where the spike in website traffic was coming from! Have liked and shared it myself.

I've gone ahead and changed the price to a round £15, which will also enable me to offer discounts where appropriate for a tenner and still make some profit (if anyone knows anyone who'd like one then let me know and you can have it for the discounted price!). Think you're absolutely right about increasing profits before scaring off the equivalent number of customers.

I went into The Bicycle Works today to show them what I had and I'm to go back in another day when one of the other business partners is working.

I agree 10 too cheap, if that has you walking to the post office for <£2 profit, for example.

12, 14, 16, 18 are better numbers than 15 for hobby business pricing, I think. They have a good gravity to them, sound more reasoned.

Increasing from 10 you'll surely double profit way before you lose half your customers.
