The headline figure for active travel looks good at £220 million. However, drilling down into the figures shows that capital investment increases by just 4.7% (rising from £152.9m to £160.016m). There is a 190.7% increase in revenue support (£12.383m to £36m), although there is a 38.4% reduction in a smaller revenue budget line (£7.3m to £4.5m) that sees the end of the smarter choices, smarter places scheme.

My concern is that active travel revenue spending was cut mid-year in 2023-24. I think the revenue budget may have been massively hiked for 2024-25 to produce a good headline figure, but with a view to cutting it mid-year. I genuinely can't see how revenue spending could be ramped up to this level.

I could be wrong, but worth keeping an eye on this.

First impressions of the Scottish Budget. The budget documents state total Scottish Government expenditure on active travel of £39m in 2016/17.

This is about the same as last year in cash terms, but a very slight fall in the share of the total transport budget, equating to roughly 1.8% of the £2.1725bn transport budget for 2016/17.

The most notable change in the transport budget is an increase in expenditure on trunk roads, up from £694.8m this year to £820.3m next year.

Draft Scottish Budget just out - key headline figure is an increase of £10m in the "Support for sustainable and active travel" budget line for 2014/15 - £29m instead of £19m as set out in the last budget document. Not clear at present what this money will be spent on - £10m earmarked for the Glasgow Fastlink bus scheme, plus funding for car clubs etc.

I think any extra money for cycling has already been announced, as increased support for Sustrans expenditure over the next two years. So in effect, this is at least partial re-announcement of extra funding for sustainable travel.

No change to CWSS.

More to follow.

The Scottish Budget for 2011-12 shows an increase in the "Support for Sustainable and Active Travel" budget line from £21.2m this year to £25.1m next year.

However, the accompanying text states "The budget for sustainable and active travel invests in the infrastructure which will allow the use of electric and other low carbon vehicles across Scotland, delivers the actions in the Cycling Action Plan for Scotland and facilitates active travel choices. This budget also includes funding for the next phase of the low carbon vehicle procurement support scheme".

So, it isn't clear whether cycle funding is up, down or the same. The fact that an increase isn't being trumpeted makes me think it will be the same or less.

Local government is taking a half billion pound hit - which does not bode well for cycling. The Forth Bridge gets the go ahead though...
