Number one son had to go for an interview. My uncle in the Isle of Wight had his photo sent back because one of his teeth was visible.

And that's still £280 before we go anywhere. Looks like Saltcoats again this year.

"They seem to have made it madly complex to get a passport now and kids need their own so we'd be looking at £400 before we even went anywhere."

£72 = £7.20 per year for an adult £46 for a child = £9.20 per year...... all you do is fill out some forms and pop 'em in the post wth your photo's. Just renewng my lot at the moment...... not at all complex.

So in theory if they brought in a helmet law in the UK you'd simply stop cycling?

Bike helmets are already a legal requirement in Spain on inter-urban roads, except (and I like this) on prolonged ascents or in extreme heat - the requirement was introduced in a 2004 revision of the Reglamento General de Circulación (General Traffic Rules). I don't support mandatory helmet laws, but people should check their facts.

I would still go to Spain to cycle - as the cycling I have done on Mallorca and Lanzarote has been truly magical (and lung bustingly, muscle achingly tough in parts).

Another proposed regulation will prohibit children from cycling on roads unless accompanied by an adult. We asked Mr Francisco de las Alas-Pumariño if children will be able to travel alone and he told us that this would be illegal. We pointed out that this would mean cancelling projects encouraging children to travel by bike to school – some of which are supported by the national traffic authority. He then admitted that this point may need checking.

Sounds completely half-arsed. Worthy of City of Edinburgh Council in its half-arsedness.

It's not a great loss for them as I'm unlikely to go anyway.
"

But imagine you loved your cycling holidays in Tenerife, or in the Pyrenees. Would you really say, "nah, just nah, I'm not wearing a helmet!", and just not go to your favourite place for the sake of a helmet?

North Lanarkshire put up signposts for the Monklands canal in Bargeddie so I had a wee keek at it this afternoon.

It's free of glass. Sort of a mud and gravel surface. The edges of the canal aren't well defined because of the weeds.

I was happier on the A89 so I'll probably not bother with the canal again unless they close the road for a week like they did last year.

Yes the passport for young children is quite a swizz, ,as of course they grow quickly and I think need renewed every five years. The canal basin at cowcaddens is an amazing bit of Victorian building that is very rarely visited. The Edinburgh contingent could take train through and then cycle back to Edinburgh if it ever gets dry on the path.

I don't really like being out of Scotland anyway.

I was nosing around that bit of canal at the weekend. They have put in new locks and electric hook ups. Looking at the Google Earth photo you can see where the M8 was going to run north along the canal. The stubs of turnouts are there on the elevated section and the west to northbound lane was actually built.

Oomph don't start that again, all the new posters won't know about the previous helmet debates

You can get into cowcaddens passport office along the canal, they might frown at the Brompton coming through the metal/bomb detector though, if you ever do need to get a passport in a hurry.
