Hi Fimm aye your spot on, i am definately NOT talking about the clearly signed Taxi Rank you have also noted, i am indeed talking about the area that Stiltskin also refers to above.
I have now drafted an email that i have sent off to the parking@edinburgh.gov address.
Waiting to see what happens,
i went through there again on Saturday on the bus sadly, i sat at the front upstairs to see the whole debacle, and it really really was a nightmare,
there was a rail replacement coach parked just prior to the ASL going west, 9 taxis backed up from Rosebery to the Bike Smith shop, buses going round them, buses going round the rail replacement coach, and for the solitary hardy cyclist leaving the station,
No option but to use the tramworks pavement to just get to the ASL safely.
Hellish didnt do the situation justice.. Radgeworks

No, it is the extension of that rank about 100 yards West along the road and across the junction.

I take it you're not talking about the area directly over the road from the station? Next to the chippy & the hotel? Because there's a yellow "Taxi Rank" sign there...

So, after about 6 weeks of waiting for the taxi's that are parking illegally on the junction of Rosebery Crescent and Haymarket Terrace to get moved on for breaking the law....., i then rang the council 7th Jan to ask them to "enforce" the 3 different no parking no loading no stopping signs there, for taxi drivers who are parking on the double yellow lines, obscuring line of sight for anyone trying to see the oncoming vehicles, and also forcing traffic round them at a dangerous angle.
No change after 8 days, i rang them again and repeated the story, no change again after a week so i rang them again yesterday and spoke to a nice Scottish lady in the parking enforcement section.
She basically told me theres very little they can do. Great news isnt it.
So from what i gather from the council, "we" all just have to get used to it basically, i thought it would be helpful to share this with everyone.
As when the now {sadly likely} inevitable accident occurs there, I want to say i tried to prevent it, and also I told you so to the council. RJ

They are little different in London if my experience of 2 cab journeys yesterday is anything to go by.

Too fast up and down wee streets around The Barbican. Really a 'get out of my way, I am a taxi driver' attitude both times.

Really surprised we were not involved in a bump!

Manganese Bronze, maker of the London cab, has suspended sales of its taxis and recalled 400... [over] peculiar steering characteristics.

I think they'll find that's called "the driver".

Oh ho ho...

Anyway, I'll find that story so much more ironic the next time I'm faced with some taxi driving muppetry or punishment passery.

how typical was that taxi driver? I usually strike up a conversation with them as I am pro-taxi - used one to take my bike back to a bike shop in Leith that shall remain nameless - I had asked when I phoned for driver who didn't mind taking a bike in his cab. Also once moved flat using a taxi - that guy wasn't so chatty. There should be a convergence of opinion in that cyclists and taxis are both in the green lane, both reducing the use of privately owned cars etc. So I nam open to thinking that taxi drivers might be pro-cyclist??

OTOH - if the fare is in a hurry and has flagged a cab then being stuck behind a cyclist might cause some gip?

I use a short stretch of the green lane on Calder road at night going west. It takes you past the gaol and the surface is keech. I go up the middle to avoid potholes but the bus drivers are a bit annoyed at times, I am not going so fast up the hill. There seems to be space so I often come in a bit when the surface improves to allow the bus to get passed. I do not like those roundabouts on the Calder Road.

If I hadn't been down in London I might have said "hey, that's me!" :)

Interesting observations, it's always interesting to see it from "the other person's point of view". Bikeless and walking / tubing my way around central London these last few days I've made a lot of mental notes to post here about "why Edinburgh isn't such a bad place to cycle after all".

Coming home last night in a taxi down Calder Road, in rush hour conditions that Cyclestreets would describe as hostile. In conversation with the driver who said he would never cycle in those conditions (I tend to agree!). I said that the key was confidence,

At that moment we spotted up ahead a chap on a bike who was heading in to town on a well-lit bike, highly reflective and doing everything by the book. He took the middle of the bus lane, he took the middle of the roundabouts and generally (while going hell for leather) showed us how to cycle confidently in really unpleasant conditions.

My taxi got stuck behind him on the greenway: we couldn't overtake because of all the traffic beside us and he quite rightly wasn't letting us past, so trundled along at his 20mph or so. I asked the driver what he thought of this.

Here's the point of this post. The taxi driver said two really interesting things. Firstly that he didn't mind bikes at all so long as they were decisive and confident so he could tell what they were doing, and secondly that what he disliked most was when they jinked through the traffic so he didn't know where they were and appeared on his left and then his right and so on.

It was interesting hearing his point of view, as it's not normally featured here...
