Goliath-I have a roller type garage door (as opposed to up and over). I installed a Bulldog GD400 lock. Again, you need to anchor it into concrete, but it is pretty solid. Only downside is they are bright yellow, which might cause someone to think you have something in there worth nicking. On the other hand, they might just think sod that, I'll try an easier garage. If they get past that then the bikes are chained to anchor points in the wall. If they get past these....I give up.

I may look suspicious, but the red Giant Deft I ride is most definitely not Goliath's!

Not good news, Goliath - which area do you live in? I'll keep my eyes peeled around the NEPN / Leith area for shifty types riding the same bike as me.

An alternative is to consider the door to be a just a cover, preventing the contents from being seen, and then using a ground anchor and chain inside.

They may get the door open silently with bolt cutters, then be disappointed to discover they need a noisy angle-grinder to proceed further. If they are boy scouts, and thus fully equipped for every eventuality, they still stand more of a chance of waking you up.

Another downside - they may assume you're insured and return in a few weeks for the new replacements...

Sorry,

@Giant. That's bad. I've woken up to a break-in outside the front door and it's not nice.

Depending on the solidity of the ground outside the garage and the kind of door you have, you might try a Garage Defender (do a Google search: there's a range of suppliers and qualities). They are designed for 'up and over' doors. They sit on the ground in front of the door and prevent it being opened. You do need solid concrete in front of the garage to bolt them into, though.

I've installed one, and I know it's protected our lock-up garage when all the ones around have been broken into.

Goliath, not good news.

Was anything else taken - i.e. were they targetting your bikes, or was it just bad luck?

I dont think you can realistically stop anyone breaking in - when I was growing up in Gilmerton, I questioned the wisdom of the two locks my dad put on the garage door.

His answer "Yes, you are right, they wont stop a determined burglar.......but they might make him think twice and move on to someone elses garage"

Perhaps not the most 'neighbourly' thought, but he is the ultimate pragmatist and they have never been burgled !!

Goliath, I am sorry to hear about this, will be looking out all along canal towpaththrough wester hailes as much reset goes on for ludicrously cheap prices though not usually drop handlebars, and certainly not tandems.

And I am truly very sorry for this next bit

Goliath, someone has stolen your Giant, boy with slingshot, answers to the name of David?

Getting my coat now. As I said very sorry.

First post on the forum-and not a happy one.
We were woken up just before 5 this morning by a neighbour who had just seen bikes being nicked from our garage. The police have already recovered our tandem but my road bike is still missing, just in case anyone sees someone 'suspicious' riding a Red Giant road bike!
Any tips on extra security for garage doors?

Cheers
Goliath
