All seems ok so far. LBS even fitted the rim tape and swapped the tyre for me. I use my bike for winter commutes and take it off road through the Dalmeny estate and on roads/paths from Fife to Edinburgh. I have experienced rear end slide with Marathon tyres on gravel, but the winter CX and Studded tyres handle the wet leaves and loose surface well. I have some CX tyres which came with the bike but they are wafer thin so I have not used them for much in the last few years. My winter tyres are Schwalbe Snow tyres, two sets of studs instead of 4 as per the ice tyres. They handle the tarmac well and the rough stuff too. With oversize tyres the hardest bit is often getting them on the rims but unlike undersized tyres there's no risk of them coming off unexpectedly. All went well until I went down Bangly Brae and the wheel/tyre mismatch caused a speed wobble. However, I'm a little concerned that even 28mm rubber is beyond what my rims can handle.</p> <p>I have Mach 1 CFX rims at the moment. They've taken a little 'persuasion' to accept the 28mm Rubinos, but ran fine with a 28mm Conti Gatorskin and a SuperSport Plus (both pretty tight tyres I grant you). According to the label, the rims are 622 x 13. I'm looking to run something between 28mm and 33mm.</p> <p>Received wisdom (Sheldon Brown, Schwalbe Technical Info) suggests I can go down to fag-packet thin 18mm tyres and up to 25mm rubber. Anything over that is uncertain/'this way disaster lies' territory. </p> <p>Reading around the interwebs, I've found people saying wider tyres will/won't work. </p> <p>Any experience of getting this to work, or should I be sticking my CFX wheels on eBay and starting over? </p>
