To: Spokes members in and near West Lothian and West Edinburgh

In case you didn't notice in our recent all-member circular, West Lothian Council has an online consultation about designating some of the rural roads in the area as 'Quiet Roads' with reduced speed limits and signage highlighting that these roads are used for cycling and walking. A similar approach has already been used in Clackmannanshire and Perthshire, and we have seen very positive feedback from people who cycle there.

West Lothian's consultation is very interesting (and innovative) as in addition to a traditional online questionnaire there is an interactive map on which you can enter your own comments, and see and comment on other people's comments. It's definitely worth a look!
You can choose to do either the questionnaire, or the map, or both, whatever you like.

It is very easy to use the map once you've worked out how...

•	First, you must register (very quick and easy).
•	Now have a look at the map and find the area/location where you wish to comment. You can zoom in using the '+' symbol, and you can move the map around by holding down your mouse button.
•	To enter a comment, click on the appropriate button under the map - probably the cycling button, or the light-bulb if it's a bright idea, or one of the other buttons, as appropriate.
•	Then click on the map at the point where you wish to comment. A small form will then appear on which you select the type of issue, and then enter your comment.
•	To make more comments, repeat the process.
•	You can also read other people's comments, and can click the thumbs-up if you like them, and even leave a comment on their comment.

The consultation is here...

https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/quiet-roads

Also, Spokes has tweeted the consultation - please give us a RT if you use twitter.

Finally, the consultation ends on 13 December, so please check it out in the next few day.

Thank you, that is helpful. It was the Registering bit I'd missed. I'll give it another go in a bit.

So I didn't spend that long looking at it, so I might not be that useful. If you follow the link in the consultation, it brings up a page with some information about the consultation. Particularly, it says "This online mapping tool, which presents some of the routes the council has surveyed to date which may be eligible Quiet Roads. It asks for your views on these, where you currently walk, cycle or ride a horse, and suggestions for other Quiet Roads (subject to further survey work on some routes and identification of gap infrastructure solutions if required)."

In the top right there's a "Close and go to map" button. Click that. You'll also need to register and log in, using the button in the top right. (I had a problem registering using Firefox).

After that, the map appears. You can then click anywhere in West Lothian to add a wee pin to the map. A form will then appear, where you can leave your comment/suggestion/rant.

The red routes on the map are, I believe, the proposed new Quiet Routes.

That's basically as far as I got; was it helpful?

West Lothian – quiet roads
Might be worth having a look at this consultation.

West Lothian has some money to spend on quiet roads.

"A period of public consultation begins on 1st November 2016 for six weeks (until 13th December) on the concept of Quiet Roads. The council invites communities and route users to offer their views on selected routes considered to date and other routes they would like to suggest as potential Quiet Roads."
