"I remember getting a tour of the Dawes factory in the early 80's"

Me too.

Think they were quite proud of the wheel machine.

About the time that Dawes became part of a Dutch bike business and also started importing far-eastern mountain bike frames for their cheap ZED range.

An interesting piece on the rise of the machine. I remember getting a tour of the Dawes factory in the early 80's, they had a wheel building machine then but they only used it for their cheapest models. How times have changed ! Interesting that the same machine is used by so many brands.
Given the time savings over handbuilt, I wonder if any bike shops have considered buying one of these in order to offer bespoke new builds or rim replacements.
