Well I agree that cycling facilities should be able to cope with different needs plus reasonable numbers of cyclists (if you build they will come - certainly works with roads).

Though "normal pace" is subjective </pedantry>

I think the headline is a bit misleading there. What Meg Hillier actually said was "It can be quite scary with all these people whizzing past you and you are afraid you are going to fall over. When cycling is planned ideally, you have a fast and a slow lane, so those that want to pootle along at a normal pace can do so."

It's the subeditor who's made it sound like she thinks only women would want to use the slow lane.

"While women make an average of just seven trips a year by bicycle each, men make 21 – three times more.

The annual survey of thousands of Britons by the Department for Transport reveals men also cycle four times further, clocking up an average 80 miles a year. Women cycle just 20 miles."

Off topic, but is there a more pointless use of averages? The vast majority make 0 trips and do 0 miles. A handful do lots.

They might as well report that the average person has approximately one breast and one testicle.

Daft rubbish.

- I would never wear a suit on a bike - I don't have money to burn on dry cleaning

"(har har)"

At least we don't have Bulent Arinc over here

The only remotely nice thing I can find to say about this drivel is that at least it's not advocating we get back in the kitchen.

Making cycling an issue of feminism is neither helpful or constructive. The beauty of cycling is that it is open to everyone - our infrastructure in general ought to reflect this but doesn't and that's the issue that is being perpetually skirted (har har).

Almost makes me long for the 'improperly oriented women' incident during the Cycle Network débâcle.
