Heard Eric Schmidt on the radio yesterday talking about them. Of course he says they're great but he wasn't claiming that they were ready for the road. More like it's a problem where they can see what the solution is although they don't yet have the solution.

Ah, the myth of the nice, empty, traffic-free highway is alive in well in the graphic commissioning editor's mind.

I've seen lots of footage of driverless cars impressively sweeping round empty, obstacle-free test tracks on sunny days. When I see them navigating Gorgie Road on a soaking wet Saturday just after the football's finished I will be more convinced of the 'it drives itself' claim.

I stopped reading that rag when it stuck two fingers up at Scotland in such dramatic fashion some months ago. As for its headline, I look forward to cars which can drive better than their idiot drivers can, but I don't believe the "safe"; habitual passengers of the safest car will still be far less healthy than if they'd walked or cycled. And will they prevent their passengers from launching themselves into the cycle lane in front of Wilmington's Cow? See, not safe.
