Call me old fashioned but I liked the old booking hall with it's wooden ticket booths, not everything is an improvement. There is nothing left of the old grandeur of the building, it feels like cheap tat.

PS @ I hear what you're saying re fumes. It would still be parky sitting out with your lattes. I like a warm place to sit whilst waiting for a train, if I have to.

The diesel fumes tend to be concentrated at the western platforms, where the Glasgow and Fife trains sit with their engines running. The eastern end of the station feels much airier and more open, given the lack of an equivalent of Waverley Bridge.

Of course, once EGIP electrifies the Edinburgh-Glsgow line things will be mightily improved.

I won't be using it, standing on a platform is bad enough, cough, cough, cough, with the diesel engines of trains, taxis and cars, all left running...

They would have to put in some serious ventilation before this could happen.

...and I thought the current bike parking was safe!! Supposedly. Every time I have gone to collect my bike later at night one or more staff have appeared, perhaps because I am taking overly long to get it together and move. There is always, it seems to me, the jobsworth who tells you to get off your bike when trying to get from the parking to the exit. Great of the bike parking being moved as far away as possible from the entrance not so long ago. Looks like this new "piazza" is going to be where the current bike parking is, how nice of them to think about us.

And one reason why Network Rail was asked if Calton Road was the best place for a hub.

But obviously they know best.

Of course. Out of the way, out of sight, out of mind. That's where cycling belongs!

If the council improve the on-road links it could work, especially for those coming from the east and north.

A “cycle hub” will be established beside the Calton Road exit, including secure cycle parking and lockers.

I wonder if the Council will do a bit of joined-up, holistic planning and take the opportunity to improve the cycling provision in the surrounding streets?

The cycling options from the Calton Road exit are pretty rotten at the moment:
- Leith Street: exit onto a dual carriageway heading west only, otherwise it's get off and push time ("Welcome to Edinburgh");
- Calton Hill: Perhaps a little too steep and cobble-y for cyclists who haven't had a chance to warm up yet;
- Calton Road: Some fairly rough cobbles on which impatient drivers tend to zoom past cyclists; and
- New Street: a steep old hill, fairly wide but it's not unusual to be close-passed by drivers overtaking into the face of oncoming traffic.

I like these images of the old Waverley (thanks chdot for the link). Note the newspaper kiosk on the eastern concourse. The colour photo of the old ticket booth (now Costa coffee) is 1969. The others are undated but I presume 1960s judging by the modern BR typeface? The phrase 'faded grandeur' spring to mind...

True, but there is still a fair amount of height/volume under the glass but with The Mound/Gallery at one end reducing natural airflow(?)

Seeing as trainsheds are generally enclosed at either end anyway to a height not much above the level of train roofs, I'd imagine that the low-hanging ridge/furrow style of Waverley is an issue (compare to the barrel vault of many other large stations) in a station already sitting in a natural collection trough for pollution.

Really??

Apart from the modern abominations of Euston and Birmingham New Street, I'm struggling to think of a comparable sized mainline station (certainly that I've been through) with the low-hanging roof like Waverley. Glasgow Queen Street and Central are palatial in comparison.

EDIT - On further research, the height of the roof is limited by an act of parliament to a maimum of 12.8m above rail level.

Waverley is of course infamous for having an overly low roof and was one of the smokiest and filthiest mainline stations in the days of steam.

I presume things have greatly improved since most of BRs 1st and 2nd generation diesels have now gone to the cutters torch - in old photos they permanently seem to be either emitting vast clouds of blue smoke, or on fire. Or both.

I do remember the expanse of road in the station when I first came up here in the early 90's. The general smog of car fumes and diesel engine fumes must have been one hell of a working environment...

Network Rail seems to be doing a good job on the refurb. The new roof has made a huge difference in letting the light in.

Opening up the space on the north side of the booking hall would help make the station more station-y by making some of the East Coast trains more visible, but removing the shops would cost NR lease income. I wonder if they are just taking about the wee stalls (bagel and donut) that are up against the west wall of the booking hall?

The opposite location from where I thought then. I was pretty certain it was down one side or the other! That might make more sense though, as I think the ticket office as by and large been in the same general location for many years, just being updated and expanded.

In fact, looking at the photo at maximum magnification, I think the sign in the distance says "Lost (or Left) Luggage", so unless that's been relocated you're more than likely correct :-)

Nostalgia, getting the better of me but I think that the old pictures look better, also prefer a pub that has an entrance onto a road rather than an internal affair such as the one now and the equally bad one in queen street. There is a fabulous pub in the station at Porthmadog, lleyn peninsula, north Wales. Also pub at st pAncras nice but tht station has mighty air conditioning

I think the Talisman was where M&S now is

Now that is gentrification! ;)

Cheers guys, I can't remember having ever been to Waverley until I started uni and meeting folk off the train etc.

I think the Talisman was where M&S now is, opposite the lost luggage office and on the main drag towards the Calton entrance.

"Where was that bar? "

I think that was alongside platform 7, the right-hand side of the current ticket office, but I could be wrong - I was way too young to be going in there at the time!

And yes, it was entry via the north ramp and exit via the south for cars, driving in front of the ticket office.
