Coincidentally, I had an ace cycle to work today mainly because I met a pal on the cycle path and we rode for a few K's into town together - shamelessly gossiping :)

You'd better believe that farmers and countryside gentlemen are bigger gossips than their female counterparts! Jeezo, can they go on and on and on and on... My Dad gets exactly the same thing from fishermen.

@wilmington's Cow - you've obviously never ridden down here - I regularly have to filter past pairs of vehicles (mostly quad bikes or farm vehicles, but sometimes just ordinary cars) which have stopped so the drivers can have a wee blether. There's been times when I've ridden all the way down to the paper shop (several miles) and come back and they're *still* there

I can't stand people who are picking folk pu who can't be bothered to get out of the car and ring the bell (or even just use their mobile) and simply toot the horn to indicate they are ready to transport someone somewhere.

Oh, and there's that new Tetley advert with the two school run mums who never have time for a chat because the only time they have is stopping to pick the kids up in their cars alongside each other. That advert annoys the hell out of me, but I just can't quite put my finger on why (apart from the stereotyping sexism, the normalising of the car school run, the simple daftness of people not being able to organise sitting down to talk to one another...)

"or a toot of the horn"

That might be friendly, but it's also bl**dy annoying.

The only time you see motorists chatting is country types in their Landrovers. Unfortunately it means the road is blocked until the conversation finishes.

Riding to work this morning I popped out at St Leonards just behind Mr ARobComp. We wound up chatting all the way through the Meadows, slightly overlapping, but still both in the cycle lane, heading past the queueing cars, and generally having a very relaxed and welcome chinwag.

You can obviously do this walking if you happen upon someone you know, but in a car you are just completely shut off from the outside world. See a friend and the best you can manage is a little flash of the lights, or a toot of the horn. It was so nice pootling in (well, Alex was pootling...) like this.

No real point to this, just another example of how mcuh more friendly cycling is.
