I had a look at the link today.

This was interesting -

"
Delivery and assessment

Centres should ensure that the member of staff responsible for delivery and assessment of this Award, and its component Units, is a competent cyclist. The term 'cyclist' refers to anyone who frequently rides a bike of any form in any context, for example recreational, touring, commuting, competitive riding.

"

Useful definition.

ALSO "competent cyclist" ought to be a pre-requisite for involvement in Bikeability (cycle training).

I believe the SQA is a Government Agency. Cycling Scotland (responsible for Bikeability) is something similar...

Someone I know, who is involved in education has sent me this -

"
HIghers will still exist! There is no National 6!!!These cycling ones sit in new SQA 'Awards' which are skills for life etc. The hope is that all pupils will be able to access some of the Skills for Life courses and the new Awards, perhaps as options within the S3, 4, 5 and 6 timetable. eg pupils can't be made to do modern languages in S4 so there may be short course options which is what the awards are.

For non-teachers/non-parents of teenagers, SQA Nat4/5 is what is replacing Standard Grades/Int1/Int2 so designed to be sat at end of Secondary year 4. Nat6 is replacing Highers so sat at end of S5 or S6.

I'm a parent of a teenager (in S2) and some of the above is news to me!

Bikeability Level 3 goes WAY beyond anything inferred here. I don't know of any school that allows Level 3 to be taught!

Is this primary or secondary or both?

It's SQA National Level 1 and 2 so really Primary stage.

For non-teachers/non-parents of teenagers, SQA Nat4/5 is what is replacing Standard Grades/Int1/Int2 so designed to be sat at end of Secondary year 4. Nat6 is replacing Highers so sat at end of S5 or S6.

Hmm, a quick skim makes it look like Bikeability rewritten down to two levels and in SQA stylee. A bit of duplication going on methinks.
Perhaps they should allow equivalency and award it to any kids who can prove they successfully completed the bikeability level 3 training?

Otoh, formal cycle training should allow class time/funding etc? Which should increase the uptake significantly I'd have thought? More trained riders=more cyclist=safer roads for me and the family, so on the whole, it's progress...

Yep! Just got this in an email this morning.

http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/65105.html

Haven't read the details yet. Will be interesting to see how many schools offer it and in what context(s).
