SafeSpeed are truly, utterly, completely bonkers. I have no idea how they manage to get invited to talk about transport infrastructure - even stranger that they often get introduced as a 'road safety' organisation.

Volunteers from Safespeed wanted now for medical experiment: get hit by a car on our local test track at 60mph (control group will be hit at 20mph).

Any volunteers?

I chanced to hear Claire Armstrong this morning and it had me shouting at the radio.

Her "point" was that accidents can happen at 20mph or just as likely at 60mph. The point that she completely ignored/overlooked was all the evidence for pedestrian survival rates increasing as speed reduces. She almost suggested that modern car design as such that being hit at 60mph for a pedestrian was no worse than 20mph. She also completely ignored reaction times - people may drive just as inattentively at 60mph as at 20mph, but at the lower speed their reaction time is proportionately increased as oncoming speeds and braking distances reduce.

Unfortunately her opposite debater didn't / couldn't get the chance to tell her to shuttupayouface.

Looking at the Saferspeed website, their thinking seems to be centred entirely on car:car collisions.

They basically seem to want to be left in peace to speed as they please. Nowhere do their cover letter of they mention or challenge the speed limits that cameras are meant to enforce.

"More people die unnecessarily in hospitals from poor	hygiene than in road traffic accidents. Yet the government's response to prevent 5000 unnecessary deaths a year in hospitals is to tell staff how to wash their hands."

Face. Palm.

Safe Speed, eh? There's an oxymoron if ever I saw. Or maybe just a moron.

Radio4 Today just had Claire Armstrong of Safe Speed on - refuting it all.
