Sight Hill - tells you a lot about conditions for cycling - a Hill from which you can get a Sight, and in this part of the world that means you get a sight of Goat Fell and Ben Lomond, and the wind that happens to be blowing past them at the time. Hills tend to be drumlin shaped because we've got plugs (rather than dykes like you have in Edinburgh) and the plugs are wrapped in clay, giving you some fine hills to climb, all doted around, so that with a bit of clever route planning you dodge around the bumps.

It's a good idea and would be great to see it work but I hope they have considered where people are going to store the bikes when they get into their work. I think that the lack of facilities at work for people who run / cycle / exercise is one of the biggest barriers.

Good for Mr McAveety for showing some ambition - but then, he's not an SNP man, so he doesn't have to toe the government line.

In the absence of an adequate cycling budget for the entire country, this would seem to be the way forward - a few examplar developments that show politicians and the public what is really possible.

It's better than Pie Tzar or Dusky Maiden Tzar which he might have stuck with

I'm never quite sure about Mr McAveetie. By some accounts he is an able guy with wide ranging interests.

Then on the other hand he has these well documented screw ups.

Oh yes you do.

Jim Orr is getting used to the idea of a different word (Supremo?).

Edinburgh already has a Tzar for fun (did I get that right?) and various other things - Steve Cardownie.

I wasn't aware we had a cycling tzar. It is a rather nice phrase to radicalise and ridicule the idea though.

Sounds like a good idea.

I think that there have been various comments as to whether Mr McAveetie would get anything out of his trip to the Netherlands – obviously by comparison with Mr Brown and Mr Orr.

Seems that not only was he paying attention he was thinking about ways that some of his new knowledge could be implemented.

A NEGLECTED housing scheme could be transformed into Scotland's first purpose-built "bike town" as part of an ambitious redevelopment plan.

No mention of the bus Mr McAveetie kept on expenses when he was an MSP…

The piece is written by Magnus Gardham so it might be made up.
