gkgk - that's the Pedersen! We may have others in the city, but I suspect only one spotted in regular use.

Can't say I've ever had this issue witht he mound but glad of the warning. There's a Pedersen in the google streetview of the junction, heading uphill.

"There is even a sequence in the operation for traffic signals on the exit from Castle Terrace, so traffic like us cyclists heading for a bar can safely emerge on to The Mound, and ride up it."

That reminds me. It didn't detect me heading out of Mound Place on Saturday afternoon and didn't detect PS just after the MCA talk and therefore needs Clarencing.

Isn't it a signalised junction for getting Market Street traffic out on to The Mound? There is even a sequence in the operation for traffic signals on the exit from Castle Terrace, so traffic like us cyclists heading for a bar can safely emerge on to The Mound, and ride up it.

I've had all sorts of drivers cut across my path dangerously at this junction while cycling up the mound.

Taxis, council vans, lorries, the lot.

the common verbal dialogue from them is:

"you think i'm going to f*cking wait for you?!?"

and yet, approaching the junction, i'm out of the saddle, on the rivet, ie. moving swiftly, and not slacking in my forward progress.

Like others i've long since stopped using this route, entirely...

... and yet its some kind of flagship cycle route, apparently?

Maybe short term suspensions like australia are worth a consideration for the guys who make a living from driving. 14 to 30 day ban for a taxi driver would encourage them to be a bit more attentive as these bans would be dished out a lot quicker that 6 month+ bans

"There is definite intent in the actions of a driver who just mows through a cyclists was is in their way."

Intent to kill? I doubt it.

Intent to carry on driving in the negligent expectation that the cyclist will stop or get out of the way? Most certainly.

Still seriously bad, and in my mind should lead to a (temporary) suspension of driving licence (though not even the taxi licence will be suspended, we know that) (if first offence etc.), but it's not murderous intent.

That mid-mound junction is awful for pedestrians too.

The lights are heavily loaded in favour of road traffic. So as a pedestrian you can wait there for ages just to cross the road. Often in tourist season (which is pretty much all the time) you get 40 or 50 people waiting to cross (just so that 5 or 6 cars can get through without delay). Then you have loads of amber-gamblers coming up Market St, turning left on the mound, further reducing the time peds. have to cross.

This junction, and the pavement from Haymarket to EICC, epitomises how pedestrian-unfriendly Edinburgh is.

It is the "might is right" gambit. Cyclists should give way at all times. I doubt they will lose their licence as if you drive for a living you can do pretty much anything you want as no-one can touch you if it means losing your job.

I hope the woman will be okay. Physically is only half the story.

Exactly.

Even IF the cyclist had been in the wrong (she wasn't) that is NOT any sort of reason for knocking her down.

Driver doesn't even seem to have said I didn't see/register because I wasn't expecting anyone.

Seems like a clear case for suspension of licences.

from above thread

TAXI - "but it was a Green light, what are you doing"?

Exactly the same as I got for the bus. The green is for the pedestrian crossing. The right turn is NOT signalled by it (and it's a green, not a filter light, so even if it were for the junction, normal rules of checking your path is clear and only going when it is safe to do so apply.)

The taxi was turning across traffic into a side road - I don't think it's possible to be on a red uphill here where it's green downhill - whichever was I think it through, the liability lies with the turning vehicle.

If the "but it's green" statement is correct, taxi driver was demonstrating his misunderstanding of the rules of the road. a.k.a. I see green, I get to drive through you as you are in my way.

Nasty junction. Always seems to have the feel of a 'temporary' junction...you instinctively feel that there's something not right about it. Had a few close calls there with taxis (as it happens) trying to sneak in a swift right-hand turn when the lights go green. Hope today's victim is ok.

I came within an inch of being knocked over at this exact same place too. As a result I never cycle up the Mound any more. The traffic light junction half way up is so dangerous that the top of Bank Street should be entirely closed off in my opinion.

This is exactly where a Lothian Bus tried same on me about 3 years ago and came within inches of ending my days with the same maneouvre.

Notwithstanding the foul tirade I got from the driver afterwards, review of the bus CCTV showed that there is a "green" light just before the junction for cars coming down Bank Street to turn into Market Street, however it's the green for the crossing, not a green to turn right (and there's no filter here). So the bus driver's "defence" of "I was on green" was a load of cobblers, he was in the wrong on all accounts.

And if she was going uphill then on there even the fastest of us are travelling at a decreased spped, so can't be as if she 'came out of nowhere' (presume taxi was turning down the road to Waverley).
