Foil blankets work surprisingly well, but they only keep heat in - they don't make you much warmer if you're already cold. If you need to warm somebody up, get someone to snuggle inside the blanket with them to share body heat.

Ideally someone they know...

Having once had to use a foil blanket in anger I can report that the thing was worse than useless... it had "gone off" in that the foil had come off the plastic backing. For hillwalking I now carry a orange bivvy bag which I cut open and backed with a foil blanket (stuck on with duct tape - if/when it deteriorates I can just replace it). Some years ago we came across a motorcyclist who'd had an accident and I had this thing with me and didn't think it get it our and cover the poor chap with it.

Well you can add the cyclist down on Princes street Friday morning I had to first aid. Wet tram tracks it seems. Witnesses say he was unconscious and tried to get up then fell over again. So I persuaded him to stay put despite his belligerent "I'm fine I'll just get to work" stance until ambulance arrived to check him out as someone had already called it. Thought shock and possible concussion. Paramedic very dismissive of me probably due to the casualty being awake and talking and aware that it was Friday was enough for him...
Reminds me I need to pack the old picnic blanket to use upside down as a rain cover and heat blanket for future since the last time I met a downed cyclist someone had one in their car and it proved invaluable. Oh and a metallic heat blanket like the sports folk have (I've got a few of them in fact. Should put a full kit in my pannier bag). That said I'm only qualified for workplace first aid but hey when you're lying on the cold wet floor any first aid is better than no first aid right?

If you've seen a Stats19 form you'll understand that the police would probably only fill one in if they really, really had to.

There are online maps of road casualties

http://map.itoworld.com/

According to that site "Casualty data is based on Stats19 data collected by the police and made available through the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS) and the UK Data Archive."

It only goes up to 2010, but presumably more will be released eventually

"Is there any value in trying to keep a record of all bike incidents we know of in Edinburgh? "

I'm beginning to think we only hear about a small fraction of the incidents that happen. I was given a lecture/telling this morning from a colleague that I should always wear a helmet - sigh. She had witnessed an LRT bus (yesterday I think)hit a woman cycling up Leith Walk. She said the bus just moved over and swiped the woman, driver didn't appear to look before moving over into her lane. Anyone know about this? - hope said woman is okay.
This was the 2nd incident in a week she's encountered, although she only saw the previous cyclist shortly after the incident, again in Leith.

I guess the police keep a record if they're informed - is this correct?

I fell off my bike tonight and banged my hip as I was coming out of the carpark turning on to the hill and cycling over a rubber wire that was working some temporary traffic lights. what next?

We did attempt to set up a google spreadsheet a while back to record incidents, but it failed primarily due to my incompetence.

Could certainly be started up again, although it's challenging to try and meaningfully capture all the variables that might be intriguing, whilst also making a form that's quick enough for people to bother filling out.

You also get a hideously self-selecting sample...

The post about the incident on the Mound reminded me that I've been meaning to post this blog post (from a club mate) for a while:
http://goingthemiddledistance.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/week-one-abrupt-ending/
She has a good "lessons learned" post here:
http://goingthemiddledistance.wordpress.com/2013/05/27/lessons-from-an-accident/
