Half a dozen very substantial cyclehoops have been attached to the railings left and right of the ped crossing just outside Comely Bank Waitrose. I could quibble a little about the positioning - a bit too close to pedestrians on the pavement really - but overall a massive improvement. There's no waitrose branding on them, so I presume it's the council that has done the job.

There is a little "thing" attached to the trolley wheels which mates up to the groves in the travelator imboilising it when the ramp reaches a certain angle.

@cb I don't know - perhaps there's a loop that locks the anti-theft brake as you go up the travelator. However there are automated messages as you enter / leave it reminding you to hold on to your trolley and to get ready to push!

It is rather impressive. It's a bit of a shame that the surrounding roads are such that we're unlikely to see space running out on those racks.

Waitrose could be even better as their bike parking has the advantage of being on the same level as the food.

Does the travelator ramp at Longstone lock the trolley wheels? On my only visit we used the lift.

Bunnets aff to Sainsburys for this (racks at Longstone mentioned above by AKen)

If you push through the entrance vestibule there's a ramp up to road level, probably to tight to cycle, but easily wheelable. Preferable to the road for exiting as you're right into the 24hour buslane.

Waitrose, take note.

On a related note, the new Sainsburys at Longstone seems to have about two dozen Sheffield stands installed undercover and right next to the entrance. Which is nice (although the car park itself is undercover as well).

I was there a few days ago: the site of the former wheelbenders is now taken up by a bench. Clearly no intention of reinstating racks. I've emailed them to complain.

There are new Sheffield racks today in three spots along Raeburn Place. I haven't been along as far as Waitrose, but they're probably putting them in there in the same batch. Lots of new bollards to prevent parking on the pavement too.

I've been in and asked the mananger now. It's good news. The council are installing new racks this week. Hurrah! It must be just a coincidence the removal of the existing ones coincided with Waitrose putting lots of plants out there.

Sorry WickyWocky, I would normally have been in there by now and could have asked, but since I'll be away for a few days soon my normal shopping habits have taken a bit of a holiday too. I'd like to know what's going on too. Does anyone else know? Have there been any further developments?

This morning when I walked past Waitrose they had put loads of plants for sale outside rendering the bike rack post unusable. The wheel-bender type racks were still there. This afternoon the wheel-bender racks had disappeared and lots of X's had been marked on the pavement. I asked a member of staff what was happening and she said I'd have to ask at the Welcome Desk. Unfortunately I had two tired and grumbly children with me and going inside and maintaining any form of family harmony seemed mutually exclusive.

If anyone is passing that way, could they see if they could find out?

I'm hoping the markings are for some Sheffield type stands and they're not going to make that their 'Garden' section and just get rid of all the bike racks. Lots of people use the railings near the pedestrian crossing, but I don't like doing that as I feel it obstructs the pavement, especially if I've one or two kids bikes to secure with the same lock.
