This was raised on Facebook yesterday as a 'wouldn't this be good in Edinburgh' thing. Of course people immediately jumped on with 'no, we need more people to drive to the city because it's dying', and someone spouting, as fact, that Princes Street takings dropped during the tramworks (it's a pet hate, people coming out with those sort of statements, without any links to evidence to back it up, and not realising that there's a fundamental difference between a street shuts for months due to roadworks, compared toa one-off, once-a-month, carnival type affair AND Princes Street wasn't open to cars anyway).

Sofas in the street! Bristol becomes the first UK city regularly to close roads to traffic on Sundays.

I think it's a good example of making a more liveable city, rather than necessarily being just for cyclists

Having it happen regularly, rather than a one-off like a Sky ride, means people can get used to it, work around it - and even as fiets says, give people a feel for what a different city might be like. And even if people only cycle once a month, for these events, just for the novelty - they might discover it's actually a perfectly practical way to get around

Also works well in Brussels. Gives residents a feel for how things could be- I've often wondered why it doesn't happen here

Ottawa has extensive car free roads on Sundays. Result is a lot of people doing lots of exercise and a much more pleasant feel to the centre. That must give visitors a good vibe. It has to said that the car drivers interviewed on the beeb gave the impression of grumpy men slobbing in car seats.

Other than novelty, is there really any benefit to cyclists from this ?
And does that justify the £200k cost and the antagonism it causes with other residents/visitors ?
Very sceptical.
