This year the prevailing wind has seemed to be an easterly? This is my preferred direction of prevalence for my commute as in to my face on way down the hill but tailwind on way home back up the hill. Balerno to Waverley is my route. However, I often find the pesky wind changes direction so that it is head wind on the way and headwind on the way back.

As CHdot mentions, the overall prevailing wind is a sou'westerly

I prefer the wind coming from S or SW, especially on the long mute which is basically a U shape. You get pushed home for the last 10 miles both ways :)

Headwinds and tailwinds provide a nice karmic balance to my life. I always prefer a headwind on the way out as it get's me warmed up and makes the return trivial whereas with a tailwind on a leisure ride it's all to easy to delude yourself into going much further than planned and then suffering for it on every stroke on the way back.

When commuting, I notice that the days when a tailwind on the way in switches to a tailwind on the way back are perfectly countered by the days when a headwind on the way in decides to reverse to a headwind on the way back too.

Quick brainteaser - no googling! - can one travel directly downwind on say a land yacht faster than the wind? Ie not tacking diagonally as a sailboat does.

I live east of work and could have sworn I was heading into a headwind this morning... I'm looking forward to going home!

Had the same yesterday - went out in the morning from Duddingston and headed out to Cammo. All the while into a headwind, but much prefer going out into the headwind cos you know it's going to be a joy coming back.

The great thing about living east of work, on windy days like today, you travel at the speed of light!

The down side is obvious. Hey ho! Like my cycling mentore told me "the wind is your friend. Head down, low gear, it's perfect training!"
