Prices are pretty eye-popping for all bits these days, alas. I've got the immaculate frame and forks of a Mercian under my bed, I've been meaning to build it up, but if I get components at about the same level as the frame (531) it would cost me over a grand to build up a bike that would overlap on bikes I've already got, hence the Mercian has been gathering dust for 18months since I was given it.

Best of luck to you though - the only time I have successfully* managed the Bealach na Ba I did it at about 10pm on a mountain bike with Spec Armadillos on - 50mm semi slicks. I was 12 years younger then though, which may have helped.

*I'm blaming me giving way to traffic for my more recent failures to reach the summit without pushing on the Chameleon

Aye, but I'm after wheels that I know haven't covered a lot of miles. The problem with secondhand for something like that is really that they could be on the verge of all the bearings going, or the spokes starting to break, or whatever.

Plus, I want to learn how to build wheels... ;)

Road, lower spoke count (not planning on riding CX this year, but next year will build a CX wheelset and can swap depending on the terrain). Will be buying all the bits for these separately, and building them myself!

What do you want? CX or Road? Fast, low spoke count or high spoke count, reliable?

Maybe not. Maybe the advert ones are just mocked up for the telly.

The one they're showing during the Tour ads, there's the ladies Wiggle team riding and the wheels are semi-deep section, black, white and orange... Being a tart, and looking for new hubs and rims to build wheels for the X to tackle the Bealach, these would look fab!
