@sallyhinch - there are two in Locharbriggs. Perhaps some of the residents there could be convinced to give people lessons on how they work?

We've been told that because Dumfries doesn't have any zebra crossings, they can't now put any in because it would confuse drivers. Not sure what this says about Dumfries drivers: that they never drive anywhere else? They certainly seem to be unusually baffled by roundabouts.

Cycling does seem to have a different flavour in different cities

It's a direct consequence of the different types of drivers.

London's drivers are skilled and very spacially aware but they're also always in a real hurry because everyone else is driving on the road too and no-one's going anywhere very quickly. So there's an aggression borne of frustration, even though the actual safety of cycling in London in my experience is quite high.

Edinburgh's drivers are not quite so skilled or aware, I'd say they were more amiable perhaps, and we only experience London-style traffic density a couple of times a day in a few locations. By and large we get a little more space on the road when cycling but you have to have the same level of alertness to cope with the lane changing and ad hoc parking and traffic light jumping. There is definitely more of a Top Gear style driver impatience than there used to be though.

I would describe Glasgow's drivers as basically Edinburgh drivers who think they are London drivers, let loose on urban motorways.

Birmingham drivers are basically Glasgow drivers who don't care about anything or anyone. I walk or get the train when I'm in Birmingham.

Disagree with Johnson on everything except cycling. Presume Gilligan resigned or lost his job? But does sound like Khan has applied frog leg, drum and cantilever brakes.

Shame. Last time in London had feeling that certain demographic had really bought into cycling to work. Living in London everyone is looking for an angle to cut costs, reduce hassle. Cycling clearly that option for younger people. The Oyster card is also the option for many.

I find cycling in London more aggressive than cycling in Edinburgh. Cycling does seem to
have a different flavour in different cities (Glasgow being my other city I have cycled in).

Actual segregated routes might be the same the world over? Gilligan also pressing for increasing the congestion charge. So curiously I find myself agreeing with him. Introduce a congestion charge for single occupant vehicles in Edinburgh and use money to build segregated routes to cycle on
