I either need a singlespeed specific chainring (but that that'll fit a 10spd chain) or a bash guard (which is difficult to find in 135BCD).

Sturmey Archer do some nice single speed chainring/crank combos. Ditto Stronglight.

A 10 speed chain is more likely to slip off too, given it's a bit narrow. Do you really need 10 at the back? Granted it's faff and expense to 'downgrade' to 8 or 7...

At the advice of Hannah off of Bike Works, I kept the front derailleur on black fruity when it became a 1x8 speed, the idea being it would serve as a chainguide.

Whether it's because the chainring is a singlespeed or because 8-speed chains are less fussy I dunno, but it never showed the slightest interest in throwing off, so I could in hindsight have removed it.

Perfect Mr Pig. Tis a Campagnolo chainset, so that figures. Can get the proper chainring spacers from there at the same time I reckon.

Chainring, at the moment, isn't in the usual form.

Took off the granny and the big ring to run single chainring. Spaced the middle ring back into a good chainline, but every now and then, just after changing to a smaller cog on the back, the chain will hit a ramp and try to shift off right. Has only happened a couple of times, but last week's occurrence has made me realise I either need a singlespeed specific chainring (but that that'll fit a 10spd chain) or a bash guard (which is difficult to find in 135BCD).

Were the teeth or the chain worn, WC? Or were you mid-shift? That shouldn't happen in the usual run of things.

Funnily enough, I did have video (and put it on FB) but can't find it now! The camera didn't quite spin round on the road to show me lying there, just the back of the bike, but the chap who picked it up had it in his hand to help with the bike, so there is a very very dazed me on screen.

Didn't put it on YouTube because I've already had plenty people telling me off the back of it that I should be wearing a helmet, and didn't really want to spark that anymore.

Put my dummy back in...

Thanks for the thoughts folks. Basically what happened was thusly. Running slightly late for work, saw lights ahead green and thought 'I can make that', out the saddle and hard on the pedals, at which moment the chain skipped off the chainring. I was down before I knew it.

Out for somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds, came to with a couple of guys (one cyclist, one pedestrian) trying to help me. Dazed, legs not quite working, but I got out, felt the blood on my head, staggered round the corner to work where, despite my protestations, a colleague decided that no, I wasn't fine, and the bleeding wasn't likely to stop soon, and took me to Minor Injuries. Where I realised I'd got quite a thump when I couldn't remember my address or the name of the colleague who had driven me there. They sent me on to A&E (same colleague took me), by which time I was compus mentis, and got a staple put in the wound.

Video camera got broken off off the bike, but it fine; cycling troos and jersey a bit scuffed but serviceable; metal edge to Brooks grips worn quite dramatically; both wheels knocked slightly out of true, but re-trued nae bother yesterday.

Perhaps got lucky, given I hit the ground hard. Worst thinkg is, as trauma can do, my pericarditis got triggered. At least I think it's that and not bruised ribs. Got back on the bike properly yesterday, wee 17 mile jaunt into East Lothian, speed limited more by the inflammation around the ribs that anything else as heavy breathing gets painful, then commuted today. Good to be back on, the bus last week was a sauna-like nightmare.

Friend of mine had staples in the wound created while fixing his broken hip (bike on cobbles incident). I can't remember if it was his or my b/f's photo of staples that led a FaceBook friend of who-ever-it-was to reveal that she'd had her C section repared with staples, so they are obviously the thing to use.

From the facebook chatter, our esteemed poster Wilmington's Cow appears to have done himself a mischief this morning and become detached from his velocipede and landed on his head. But he is OK and feeling sheepish, so I hope the damage is mainly to his pride.
