Canal towpath good until after Heriot watt university, then rough stretch, then another new Bit from ratho to climbing centre? Then quite mixed. Not great for a tandem. Should be very dry just now. WoL path also a little bumpy for a tandem but is very dry at moment.

Canal path is tarmac all the way out to the bypass and a wee bit beyond. A couple of miles before Ratho it starts to get pretty rough and I'd want some pretty chunky puncture resistant tyres. Last time I did that bit on my 23c's and I think I chipped a tooth.

This bit:
"Over the past year the fleet’s bill for replacement tyres and shock absorbers has averaged out at £300 per van".

Erm. Bearing in mind the high mileage that these courier vehicles do, that seems to be a pretty acceptable annual bill for tyres & shocks?

"Over the past year the fleet’s bill for replacement tyres and shock absorbers has averaged out at £300 per van"

So? Is that worse than they'd expect for the mileage they are doing? Pretty meaningless without context.

Oh, sorry, apparantly that's a "colossal" level of damage.

"The couriers drew up their list of shame after suffering colossal levels of damage to their delivery van fleet."

Who writes this stuff?

Great post!! and I love the commenters, again, the same few small-minded folk with nothing to do but demaind their rights.... The comment about E Scotland Street Ln is unfounded as I use that road every day and its a pleasure to ride on. Its the polar opposite of E Scotland Street Ln which resembles one of the obstacles on Kick Start, is unbelievable.

@SRD, wasn't planning on going further than the turn-off to WoL path. Last went out to Linlithgow on the towpath two years ago, recall the surface out west was poor then and lots of nettles/brambles scratching the legs/arms...

thousands of fed-up motorist who gingerly thread their way down the Capital’s roads on a daily basis

I'd love to see some more ginger thread-style driving! And if it seems bad on wide, low-pressure car tyres with independent suspension and shock absorbers then try it on a bike!

Shame to hear about the bike, SRD. :o(

I shouldn't be surprised but no mention of how dangerous it is for cyclists and pedestrians. Even the most experienced of cyclist can't avoid all potholes, particularly if drivers haven't given them adequate space to take evasive action, or they're unfamiliar with the road and drivers typically don't drive defensively enough to mitigate any pedestrian trips/spills from poor road surfaces and utility covers.

The worst Edinburgh road in my book is stretch West-bound along Gorgie Road between the Salvation Army church and the Horseshoe Inn.

To avoid the moon-crater potholes on this stretch, you need to filter all the way into the right lane going straight ahead at the junction. A death-trap if you reach the junction on a green light and is only a matter of time before there's another tragedy.

probably some damage from edinburgh roads too. hard to know, but sections beyond the bypass very bumpy, lots of loose, sharp aggregate - big pieces. not a nice surface at all.

the speed-bumps on the way into/out of linlithgow caught the underside of the bike too.

And the chicanes get smaller the further you go - could only get tandem through the last one before linlithgow by hoicking it perpendicular on back wheel.
