My 8 year old son has been glued to the TdF highlights. His take? He wants Team Sky to win. He thinks Chris Froome is good, and also Nairo Quintana. He prefers Bradley Wiggins, and misses his presence on the Tour this year.

I presume folk read this too? Looks like Charterhall has...

"For me it was always about winning the Tour," he said. "I've done that. If I'm honest I don't think I'm prepared to make those sacrifices again that I made last year, with my family and so on. I've achieved what I've achieved. I'm incredibly happy with that.

"If I do anything else after this it will be stuff I want to do, stuff that I'm willing to train hard and sacrifice for really. For me it was always about winning the Tour, that was a huge thing for me, a huge journey; I've been doing that four years. I don't know if I'd want to go through all that again to be honest. I've always had other goals and there are other things I'd like to try and do."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jun/21/bradley-wiggins-never-ride-tour-de-france-again

Hints at Paris-Roubaix.

@Charterhall, you are giving the distinct impression that you're disappointed in Wiggo.

He may have peaked too early. He may be injured or unfit because of illness. Or he may just be knackered after last year's efforts: not just the Tour but the Olympics too. Or maybe he just didn't fancy plying domestique to Froome.

Cavendish is looking a bit off form on occasion this year too, despite some memorable sprints in this year's Tour. The only UK rider who seems to have kept his form is Froome, who has everything to play for and the motivation to push himself.

Yes, a "knee injury", that was the story. Suspiciously convenient.

@Charterhall - I'm pretty ignorant on these matters, although I thought he'd had an injury too?

In any case, if he's chosen to spend more time with his family, that also is a commendable level of commitment.

Granted, not one that will necessarily win races!

The reason he (almost) had what it took to win the Tour last year was because he'd dedicated himself to nothing else for the previous 12 months. This year he told Sky management that he couldn't make that commitment again, he'd sooner spend time with his family. Which is why he's had nothing like the form this year that he had last. With that lack of commitment I would question why anyone would want to sign him for the Tour. Paris Roubaix on the other hand...

Certainly the Eurosport pundits were tipping Wiggo for BMC last week. He had what it took in the TdF last year, so maybe he can do a job for BMC too, depending on who else is in their lineup next season.

Sir Wigalot is going to struggle to make much headway in the other grand tours while they persist in sticking in the ker-azy climbs with inadequate long rouleur-friendly TTs to balance things out.

He should just become part of Sky's spring team and target a couple of cheeky classics next year. Would love to see him give Paris-Roubaix a proper go.

I'd heard that The One Hit Wonder was missing the Vuelta in favour of the ToB - more adulation and considerably less effort. Can't think why BMC are interested in him.

Wiggins will still be riding for UK Postal at the Vuelta, presumably

Can't see Froomestrong bothering with that one this year

1430
NEW SKY CONTRACT FOR FROOME
Big news from the Team Sky camp.

BBC Sport's Chris Bevan reports: "Tour de France leader Chris Froome has agreed a new contract with Team Sky until the end of the 2016 season.

"'There is an agreement and they are just working on finalising some of the details at the moment,' Froome's fiancee and manager Michelle Cound told BBC Sport.

"'It should be announced in the next week or two that he will be extending until 2016.'

"The 28-year-old Kenya-born Briton has been with Team Sky since its inception for the 2010 season.

"His current deal runs out in 2014 and the new agreement would replace the terms of the final year of that contract and extend for two further seasons."

1432
Presuming that the "i's" are dotted and the "t's" are crossed on that new contract for Chris Froome, the question it obviously leads to is... what now for Sir Bradley Wiggins?

This team surely ain't big enough for the both of them...
"
