"I see Halfords are out of the £899 Team CX,so i guess its going to be popular"

I read elsewhere that there is a production fault with the Team model. There is a crack in the paintwork, might just be superficial. As a result they've all been taken off the shop floors and removed from the website until they figure out if it's just a bad batch or a fundamental design flaw.

Okay then, picked up the bike Friday evening
Worked all day Saturday,so today was my chance to have a good look.

Lets start with the bad

missing valve cap
front mech wasnt shifting from the big ring, adjustment screws screwed in tight

grub screw on one of the inboard brake levels loose, with the pivot pin(?) falling out!

pedals attached by Hulk Hogan

front reflector angled up,rear fitted tight to the seat. meaning it needs moved to adjust the saddle

useless bell already not working after two uses

rear brakes rubbing. I have left it to see if it beds in

some sort of brown overspray on the bar tape. I thought it was packaging sticking by static cling on collection, however Im thinking its copper grease overspray

So some minor, some annoying(gears are nice to have!) and some dangerous. That brake pivot could be a nasty one

Now to be fair, the 10% offer meant bikes had to be collected by Friday. So im guessing the staff are hammered with bike builds
However thats not the customers fault

To the bike!
Bit more decals than I would personally choose
Seems to have decent clearance and has mounts for rack and proper mudgaurd.
However I can see the front guard required a bit of bending to get round the caliper.
Hopefully the brakes will bed in as right now they have no power
The drops will take some getting used to. I havent ridden a bike with them in about 30 years :o and that had downtube shifters.
I like it though. Those bigger tyres make it nice over the bumps road tyres punish you with.
The secondary brake levers are nice for a drops noob
The Sora groupset doesnt seem the smoothest but it does the job, when i remember which lever does what!

I see Halfords are out of the £899 Team CX,so i guess its going to be popular

Well I have a good comparison
The hybrid is similar in spec/weight
So I'll be interested to see for myslef
hoping to have the funds fro a decent road bike to add next year
when i was in,someone as taking the next model up away. I prefer the black to the silver

Nice bike Custard. My work's halfords cycle scheme opens soon and that's one of the bikes I'm considering. A quick review of it would be appreciated once you've done a few miles on it. I'd be particularly interested in how it copes with the rubbish road surfaces.

Okay Im back out of my huff.
Ordered one of these

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_992074_langId_-1_categoryId_165710#tab1

Voucher costs me £450 for £500
Joined British Cycling with discount code,so about £23
combined 10% off on Halfords site and British cycling 10% gave me £485 or so
grabbed a brush set and little scooter toy to make £500
Not amazing spec but for the money its okay?
The 2014 Sora shifters seem to have dropped the little shifter buttons

As and aside. The next model up with carbon fork has one ugly brake mount!

The 56 & 54 felt okay for reach. The 54 would have needed the saddle up for me
I do quite like a long reach
however I didnt like the lack of standover on the 56
it wasnt right(cough) up,but a bit closer than i like

@ custard - wht height are you?

I am 5 10.5 (true) and have 56.5, 57, but actually have shorter legs and longer back so ideally wold like a bigger bike lengthwise but this is always poo-poohed in the shops. I adjust the stem to increase reach but tht seems marginal. Bigger stem might do it. CAAD 8 I felt had a longer reach but poorer spec than the bike to work buster I went for.

Depends where the measurements are taken?

If your toes were on the ground with the seat post it of the frame a bit then the 56 was maybe right. But if you were not convinced then tht would niggle if you went and bought it.

Effective (horizontal) top tube length is important.

There are calculators of "ideal" frames given the type of rider that you are. See for example:
http://www.competitivecyclist.com/Store/catalog/fitCalculatorBike.jsp
In the end, you are best to test ride.

BTW I wouldn't necessarily believe the sales guys at either EBC or Evans.

I did a bike measurement thing once and was told I should "on paper" have a 60cm frame (I'm 6'1).

I currently ride a 57cm and a 58cm when it comes to road bikes. One is an old straight top-tube bike and the other is a CAAD9 from a few years back, which is near enough straight.

I think nearly everything these days comes with same sized cranks*, so as long as you can get comfortable reach and saddle height/position there's probably no "right" answer, particular with compact geometry frames, whose sizing is theoretical anyway, based on what the bike might be if it had a <strike>proper</strike> straight top tube. I personally find it preferable to buy somthing a little bit smaller and to extend seatposts / stems as required, rather than trying to stretch out on something too long.

* a particular bugbear of one G. Obree.

Just to update
been looking around and favouring the Caad 8

So to my point
I went to EBC and had a seat on the 56 which the sales guy stated as my likely size
had me on it,checked standover height etc and said it was a good size for me.
I wasn't so convinced (I dont know road bikes though)
Tried a 54 in Evans which is more the size I thought I would be
sales guy suggested i might even be better with a 52 to allow for a higher seat position to match the geometry
So theres 3 sizes for one guy on the same bike
Guy in Evans was very helpful and looked to see if they had an 52s in but sadly not. suggested test riding a 52/54 when they get them in

Now was the guy in EBC right(to his thoughts on fit) or could a reputable bike shop try and sell a 56(the only 2013 Caad they had left) despite it not being the right size?

I Liked the Caad 8 bike I tried at EBC. I have wee legs but long back and felt it let me stretch better than the other bikes I tried. However it was not as highly specced as the Allez comp I went for. Would say CAAD 8 better value for money but I was looking to push the bike scheme to the limit to get the biggest discount. Could easily.have gone for the CAAD 8 instead

Okay. time to revisit this
Im considering adding money I cant afford to the voucher :o
Been looking at the Cannondale Caad 8 range
Any views?
Sadly I cant take advantage of discounts available at this time with the new bikes coming out
I could plonk it on the credit card but I would be able to clear it for some time(then buying a bike with the voucher to sell on)
meaning any savings made would likely be wiped out by the interest

no doubt Halfords will want the full retail of £550 for the Allez
"

When I got my C2W bike, the retailer said they wouldn't do a deal on a C2W bike as the loan company doesn't pay full price for the bike, so retailer is already selling it cheaper than full price.

Sorry to hear about the iPod.

>Really? Halfords won't let you have a test ride??? That's crazy.

Isn't it just. I suspect they just want zero signs of wear on the bikes.

Although what they told me was that I couldn't take the bike outside for a test ride. Unless I bought it. (duh)

They didn't say I couldn't ride it up and down inside the store, so I hopped on and did just that. Easier with an MTB, admittedly.

limits £500. no doubt Halfords will want the full retail of £550 for the Allez
From previously speaking to them,Scotby will take the Halfords voucher
I forgot I had originally looked at the Allez before going for the hybrid as SCotby said they didnt take the vouchers.
then emailed a few weeks later to say they could

To add to my skintness. some *!*@ smashed my car window and got away with my ipod today.
I never leave it in the car but of course today I was tired and forgot.
they got lucky

Halfords used to say they could get you any bike for C2W? So Allez might be an option. Some suggestion the shifters might be an issue if hands down in the drops on the boardman in the road cc review. The boardman looks better. If no test ride then have to work it out from sitting on them in the shoppe

founds this, however with delivery and fee (if they take out C2W) it makes the bike £550

What about an Allez?

Seems to have Shimano 2300 across the board, so therefore a step down on components to the Carrera. Probably has a better frame to compensate, but I don't know how you would compare frames aside from weight.
